Sean Payton made a bold move on his third day back on the job. And he made the right move.

Firing Steve Spagnuolo wasn't an easy or obvious choice, despite the New Orleans Saints' historic struggles on defense in 2012. No one person deserved the blame for a failure so epic, and a respected coach with Spagnuolo's track record may have deserved more than just one season to prove himself.

But Spagnuolo prefers a 4-3 defense, and the Saints want to run a 3-4. And it should come as no surprise to anyone who's been reading my opinions for the past month that I say, "Amen" to that.

Why the 3-4? Let me count the ways.

Alot of us have been calling for a change to 3-4 for a while, I'm glad SP has finally made the call

It should also greatly benefit players like galette, martez and cam Jordan

There are alot of pass rushers in the draft that have come from a 3-4, solid move that I think will massively improve our pass rush - but only if we go OLB/DE in the draft

Is it really that shocking that Spags was sent packing? Really? The only surprise to me was that Sean had the hutzpah to do it. Usually everyone's so stodgy, "Let's give it a couple of years to see it develop, blah, blah, blah." Hey, we're entering into a season without much cash to buy many new people and with last season's defensive performance, we need a quantum leap not a gradual upswing. And really look at our former "respected" coach's performance. He lucked into some stellar linemen in NY. Had a pretty good game against the vaunted Patriots that was won as much by a good offensive scheme and a bit of offensive luck. Got a HC gig where he went, what, 10-38 or so? And his only claim to fame was that he beat us -remember, that was the year we went on tour without our running game..... I bet his ass would've been gone much sooner had rogger not been in the way.
This just shows Sean's hungry. I like that in a coach!

Like the article and agree with the points made.

Also, we can't obsess about the 3-4 spots and forget about finding good corners and safeties too. CB/S is damn difficult to play in today's NFL and these guys always seem to get dinged up.

Another point - with the advent of successful mobile QB's like RG3, Russell Wilson and Cam, the 3-4 makes it easier to use one of our LB's to spy and shade the QB.

the defense in the past several years has been so predictable something had to be done. It really got noticed when GW had to continually blizt every dam down.payton saw it himself on the vacation for a year. He knew something had to change.and it starts with 4 backers that can stop the cut back run that has eaten us alive.v

Re: Sean Payton's bold switch to 3-4 defense is the right move for New Orleans Saints

I actually agree with someone from Nola.com, for a change. Been saying for years that 4-3 is a tired scheme, and 3-4 is tougher to run on.

How well it generates a pass rush will depend on the players, but it's proven to be a complicated scheme to block. Some have disagreed with that, but I think that's because not as many DC's are running a 3-4. I don't know why that is, but those who do run it seem to be quite successful. We'll see.

If the defence, now that we switch to a 3-4, can get half asgood as the dome patrol combined with our current offence should be a sight to behold.
