Depth was already a concern at linebacker, so the loss of OLB Sedrick Hodge to a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy hurts--especially because the team has lacked production on the strong side in recent years. James Allen, who will replace Hodge, has looked solid. Allen is more physical against the run than Hodge but isn't as adept in coverage and is prone to mental mistakes.

Rookie DE Will Smith looks like a future star. He's the team's fastest pass rusher off the edge and will play immediately in passing situations. At 6-3, Smith lacks ideal height for an edge rusher, but he's strong.

Howard Green continues to hold off Johnathan Sullivan at nose tackle. Green worked hard to lose about 15 pounds in the offseason and reported to camp at 315. He's much more effective at that weight and has earned the starting job with his ability to hold up against the run. He won't contribute much as a pass rusher, so he'll come out in passing situations.

ON THE RISE: E Boo Williams has been unstoppable in practice and could validate coaches' contentions he's on the verge of a Pro Bowl-caliber season. At 6-4, 270, Williams is a mismatch against linebackers and safeties. WR Nathan Black has a chance to beat out Talman Gardner for the final receiver spot, especially if he performs well on special teams. Black isn't particularly big or fast, but he knows how to get open and makes plays when the ball comes his way.

Seems like Green will either make Sully better or make him eat more pancakes, which one is it guys? I still think Sully will prevail.
