Are New Orleans Saints interested in Romeo Crennel?

1 Attachment(s)
The New Orleans Saints are interested in former Kansas City Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel as a candidate to replace fired defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Friday and later confirmed by ProFootballTalk.

Crennel has not had much success as a head coach, but he's repeatedly proven himself an elite coordinator. He won three world championships with the New England Patriots and his work with the Chiefs' defense earned him a promotion when Todd Haley was fired in 2011.

Eric Mangini also is reportedly up for the job, but a source told PFT that Crennel is the preferred choice.

I think he's the ideal choice to install the 3-4 for us, then let some young hot shot take over in a few years.

I'd like to see Romeo work his magic wit the Saints.

This would be a great move

The chiefs are sending 6 defensive players to the pro bowl this year despite only winning 2 games mostly due to Crennels defensive coaching

I think crennel would be the perfect guy to start off our transition to a 3-4 D

That is true, I read som articles talking about the Chiefs sending quite a lot of players despite their record.

Stuff like that always happens but it depends on contracts and such too.

No to Eric Mangina.
Yes to Romeo Crennel
Big Yes to Mike Singletary if he's available.

I have only bad vibes for Crennel. I'm not that excited about this.

Crennel would be my #1 choice for DC for 3 reasons.
1) He is a good person. Players and fans will love him.
2) He has extensive experience implementing the 3-4 defense and has a very credible resume as a DC.
3) He has been through teams that changed from a 4-3 to a 3-4 which to me is key. It's one thing to run the scheme, it's quite another to teach it where it hasn't been played by most holdover players and to fast track it's effectiveness.

This made me think of something.

We have several players that have played in the 3-4 before, and played it very well

Bunkley - In Denver
Hawthorne - in Seattle
Jordan - Played in a 3-4 at Cal
Tom Johnson - I think he played in a 3-4 in Canada.

So Lofton and Wilson haven't, and I'm not sure about Galette.

Johnson played on Calgary and they ran a 4-3, although CFL uses 12 defenders so it's a 4-3-5 scheme. I don't know for sure if he played 3-4 in college or elsewhere though. I think Will Herring played it as well and of course Vilma in a limited role.

In some of the CFL footage I've seen on TJ they were lining up with a 3-man front with him as one of the DEs (or was it 3 DTs), but there were only couple of clips where I saw that, so I don't know how often they did that...?

And yeah, Herring came from that Seattle system where they had a 3-4.

Where did you hear this? Not doubting you, just haven't followed closely. Last I heard Crennel said he had not been contacted yet. Shows how far out of the loop I really am

Romeo or Lovie both are good a D coordinator so anything less won't get us a top 10 D

Lovie's a 4-3 guy (and most likely sitting out this season) and Singletary seems a little loopy. I'm really feelin' this Crennel thing. We could get to the Superbowl with a top twenty D and to the playoffs with a top thirty! Yeah we were that bad this year!

A top ten D would be pretty cool....

Re: Are New Orleans Saints interested in Romeo Crennel?

Romeo will receive $3.5 million from KC for the next two seasons unless he lands a gig.

Whatever he's paid would lower what the Chiefs pay him by the same amount.

I'm sure they're rooting for him to land in New Orleans as well!!

3.5mil to do nothing for the next two years???

I can't see paying him that much as a defensive coordinator...

The Chiefs make up the difference between his current paycheck and the $3.5M. Hell if it were me and they pissed me off by the way they handled it, I'd go coach for someone else for a dollar.

Re: Are New Orleans Saints interested in Romeo Crennel?

From NFL Network's Ian Rapoport Regarding Crennel's contract situation:

"Considering Crennel's interest in Saints

The Saints are interested in a 3-4 defensive guru, and as we mentioned above, the name associated most with them is Romeo Crennel. And that's not just because of Crennel and Sean Payton's New York Giants ties (though they never worked together). But here's something you should consider: First of all, I'm told as of right now, the Saints haven't reached out to Crennel. They might, they probably will, but they haven't.

Second, Crennel signed a three-year contract with the Chiefs. He was fired with two years left. His contract had offsets. So ... in order for Crennel to return and coach the Saints -- ready for this? -- he'd have to do it for free. Crennel would have to coach the Saints for money that he'd be getting regardless. Crennel will earn $3.5 million per year over the next two years, I'm told.

He wouldn't receive any additional paycheck for coaching the Saints; it just would come from two different places. Still, the Chiefs would be happy because they'd have to pay less. Just one more thing to consider."

Darrelle Revis trade could affect Rex Ryan's future with N.Y. Jets - NFL.com

So if you look at it. We won't be paying him anything for 2 yrs....but he's not losing out because he's still getting paid. And if we did hire him....if for some reason, GOD FORBID, we saw no improvement...we could cut ties and not have one penny lost because of it....Thats a win win. I want to hire him even more now.

Re: Are New Orleans Saints interested in Romeo Crennel?

I would welcome Rac to N.O. this is a no nonsense DC, someone said it his ties to Tuna and NY have SP looking to slot him in.

lee909 01-29-2013 12:19 AM

Is there a downside to hiring him.
We can essentially pay him nothing, though I would imagine we would pay something to keep relations good with another team.Never know when we may want to trade with them.

Re: Are New Orleans Saints interested in Romeo Crennel?

Why would he want to work when he don't have to? As I understand he could sit at home and chillax and still get paid.

We might have to put out a pretty good offer.

Nah, Crennel wouldn't sit out. This guy may be a crappy head coach, but he knows how good he is at being a defensive coordinator. And I imagine some team will eventually offer him another head coach position, just to see him fail again.

I agree we should pay the man SOMETHING, but I don't think it's about the money for this guy.

Re: Are New Orleans Saints interested in Romeo Crennel?

And to be honest...I don't care what they pay him....it has nothing to do with the player salary cap.

Just to throw something else into the mix, Rob Ryan as of now, is NOT going to be the DC of the Rams. Jeff fischer stated the scheme was not a fit for them.

Yeah I saw that....even though he runs a 3-4...he is just as much of a PR nightmare as his brother & GW. We really don't need that again. If their going to go with someone proven in the league in 3-4...I'd rather it be a more humble leader like Crennel.

But I wouldn't be opposed to getting a college guy like the DC from Georgia. Now that I think about it a up & coming college guy might be what we need. Bring that college type excitement to the team and get them fired up. We do have some talented young guys that might need that type of coach.

I don't think the college guy works as a HC per say. After about a yr or 2 players seem to tune the guy out but as a DC or OC it seems to work better. IMO. Because their focused on one facet of the game instead of managing the whole team.

(1) Is he affordable?

(2) Is he an effective communicator?

(3) Is he knowledgeable about proper, effective tackling?

(4) Is he familiar with secondary coverage skills?

The Next Saints Defensive Coordinator is participating in the Superbowl...

There are several possibilities on both squads; but I think it's gonna be...
