Saints wanted to talk to Donatell, 49ers said no

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Grantham has had a bit of success in college, but his pro record looks like he was one of Spags' mentors. I know, you'll quote me the stats of his first years, but look at what he did the years ...

Grantham has had a bit of success in college, but his pro record looks like he was one of Spags' mentors. I know, you'll quote me the stats of his first years, but look at what he did the years before he was fired and really? Meh. A guy with only a couple of years of success somewhere makes me ask if it was the coach or the players he was lucky enough to have.

Who wants that loser? I want a DC who can create a plan to stop an average qb like Flaccid.

I remain unimpressed with the list of candidates. Ryan is a blowhard, with no history of winning. He's pumped out some decent defenses, and some bad one's. Nothing great that would suggest he's the man to turn around this train wreck.

Grantham does not have an impressive NFL track record.

Crennel reminds me of Ryan, without the stupidity. His accomplishments have been much overblown, in my opinion. He's ok, all in all, but not what I'm hoping for.

The 49ers have a slew of pro bowlers on defense. I'm not certain it matters who coaches them, and thus I'm not terribly interested in any of their assistants. Some may argue that the coaches turned them into pro bowlers, but I beg to differ. These aren't high schoolers. I'm sure the 9ers DC and his assistants are competent in coaching defense, but it's not all about them.

But these are the guys out there, so I guess it's Crennel or Ryan, and I don't see Romeo passing up the chance to make 3 million from his couch. I'd take any of the other names over Ryan, because of the risk of huge distraction, but I don't get the feeling Payton feels the same way.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.
