I was holding out hope right to the end that this wasn't going to happen.

Oh well. Welcome to the team. Please don't suck. Thanks.

He will fit well and still be a tackling machine! Always has been ... always will be.

Oh and in all honesty.....I think facing a 3-4 everyday in practice...the one defensive scheme Brees struggles with every year...is going to do nothing but make him better.....and thats scary if you think about how good he already is....

Re: SAINTS HIRE RYAN AS DC

People comparing him to Williams like it's a bad thing. The Saints WON A SUPERBOWL with Williams as DC. Yeah, now we have the whole bountygate, but, still have a Lombardi trophy.

Our defense doesn't need to be top 5. Just needs to hold the other teams to 20 a game and get a few turnovers. Ryan can do that.

I hope not, I don't really like Jenkins. Id rather his teammate Kwame Geathers in the 3rd and pick up a vet through FA.

I am not a huge fan of the move...but it is not because of his coaching ability it is solely based on his demeanor. To counter that he is with the correct team because Sean is not going to tolerate shenanigans and will temper him. I just hope Ryan is able to accept the scoldings and stay focused on his job.

Re: SAINTS HIRE RYAN AS DC

I'm down with it. Ryan is a good coach. I think history shows that. In my heart I believe our problems last year were coaching related - specifically Spags flat out refusal to adjust to the players he had on the roster.

Ryan is a passionate guy. A colorful guy. Personally I think he's going to fit in well and I think we're going to see marked improvement. In fact I think we'd see marked improvement even if we didn't change a single player on the defensive roster.

Color me excited.

Just my opinion, but I think Lofton will do well in the 3-4 scheme as an ILB because he possesses a decent ability to shed blocks and still make plays. He's shown he can break the FB or TE isolation and be the primary tackller. And he's done it many times on stunts where he gets the tackle or guard as well. One of the reasons Vilma regressed in New York when they flipped to a 3-4 was because he now had to face lineman getting to the second level and he couldn't be protected to flow to the ball and make plays. He started to get neutralized. Lofton plays the power game better. Your 3-4 ILB's are your bangers. Lofton reminds me of Vaughan Johnson in that way. He can escape the hands of a center or guard and make a tackle. I think he will adapt to be unprotected and make plays while at the same time making his partner ILB look really good as well.

I think our second ILB needs to be a speed guy. Someone who is better in coverage and can get depth and side to side range.

run support will not be an issue but his coverage skill lack and that will be exposed more in a 34 imo

Jay Ratliff, 6-4 & 303 lbs
Terrance Knighton, 6-3, 330 lbs

Oh, and even though Ryan wasn't my favorite for the job, I'm glad they hired someone finally, and he'll have something to prove after how things went down in Dallas.

plus i think getting out that hole with the jags could do him well right now. dude might just need a fresh start with a winning team. he played well under Jack.

Unless you've coached with Ryan or Payton, i'm not sure you can claim any of this.

Get ready for a lot of shots of Rob Ryan on the sideline looking completely befuddled and confused lol... It's pretty common with him.

Why did thesaints hire a coach wrhose never been above the top 10 coaches in the league. 13th raked defense, really? Wasn't their an option that atleast finished in the top 10?

Because he was with the Cleveland Browns and the Oakland Raiders for the majority of his coordinator days.

His defense was also ranked 5th in the NFL before Dallas was devestated by injuries, and they still finished mid-pack.

Those kind of guys rarely get fired, even less often move laterally and usually move up.

great … and the bad Defensive decision continue. …

Its ok he'll be fired after wasting 2 more years, and maybe costing us a ring.

I waiting for the next announcement that Shanle is our defensive captain.

I don't get the hate. Hell he had to play two positions last year -his and Robinson's.

Unless in much mistaken they are talking about drafting Jonathan Jenkins not Malcolm.

I certainly can claim it...obviously you don't agree, which is fine. We all hope and agree it would be very difficult to be any worse than last year on D and as I said it really has nothing to do with his coaching ability, last years Cowboys were probably the most talent he has had to work with and from his first year with the Cowboys to his final year I think they held 14th overall rank...no gains

None taken...I only see sideline antics and also have seen in the past how stern Sean is with boneheads...ie..wrong cleats Mike bell :)

GW didn't 'fix' the defense either, but at least it got the Saints a Super Bowl ring.

Like the vast majority of us on the forum, I don't know if the claims by players that Spagnuolo's style was the reason the defense didn't respond/produce, but I wish he would have gotten another year with Payton back.

I am hopeful that the Saints signing Ryan will be enough to get some FAs to try out with the Saints. Maybe that alone will be enough to get the players we have to play better.
