Why Goodell did us a favor and What Sean Payton saw while suspended.
We live everyday tightly focused on the things we are used to seeing. Work , Sleep , Eat repeat. Given that Sean Payton was in the unusual position he was due to a faulty investigation in which there still are no facts to date , he by being punished was forced to sit back and really got to see every error of his way as a coach. We should thank Goodell eventually ( not just yet ) for the following reasons.
He watched his prized machine get torn down , and fight back and ultimately fall apart. In case study fashion I say we did the best thing by having a up and down season. He got to see literally us at our worst and us at our best and everything in between. In science you want to see a case study give you everything it's got so you know much more about it and can size up what needs be done more effectively. Here is what he saw. 1. We really need to do something drastic on Defense 2. Running the ball is what got us back into the fight % 3. When we do not run the ball We are a soft team. 4. Drew Brees is not Peyton Manning. If we can run the ball , he is better than Peyton Manning. Sean Payton has made statements that seem to indicate that this is a rebuilding team. Why ? His last year coaching he was 13-3 ? Because he knows we can't survive in the NFC south being a finesse team , let alone the NFC period. Expect us to be more physical , and to put Ingram and Ivory to Work. Ed Reed is a wild card , but it's possible. |

Payton made the "rebuilding" statements because the team is going to be moderately restructured due to the cap. He has to hedge given he doesn't know what kind of roster awaits.

I just hope our defense is gonna be blood thirsty and mean. I'm suck of a soft defense cause they think out offense will bail them out. My gosh I want to see them flying to the ball and making mean tackles. We didn't have that with Shanle and company. But hopefully with Lofton Gallette, Tez, and company will be that mean vicious defense we've all been waiting to see.

You make some good points but I don't think Goodel did us any favors. I think he could have learned just as much watching game film at his office on Airline Hwy.

I think RR should sit down and watch game film of the Dome Patrol before he starts putting this thing together.

Nastiness and attitude are important to win a psychological edge. But without speed, discipline (being where you belong), ability to tackle, and ability to clog up the middle, all the attitude in the world will amount to nothing. We need players on defense, and we need a DC who can pull those elements out of players through his scheme. Let's hope Rob Ryan can do that.

Goodell has done us no favor. Ever.... Lets not get confused.
If you happen to thank him, you'll sleep on the porch. Payton is doing some retooling. However even if he changed nothing he would still publicly state changes will happen. The absolute implosion of our defense demands it. As would the fans. |

He didn't do us a favor. Giving back our second rounder would be a nice start though.
