Holder: Saints Cut Dave Thomas, Johnny Patrick

1 Attachment(s)
@LarryHolder: #Saints have released TE David Thomas and waived CB Johnny Patrick, via league source.

The Saints have made a pair of cuts, one for financial reasons and one of the more traditional variety.

According to Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Saints released tight end David Thomas and waived cornerback Johnny Patrick.

Thomas is a good second tight end, but he was due $1.5 million in base salary this year, and a $200,000 roster bonus.

Patrick, a 2011 third-round pick, started just one game in two seasons. He’s subject to waivers, but Thomas is now free to find new employment.

The Saints are still significantly over the salary cap, and more releases are inevitable before the start of free agency.

I'd have liked to keep J. Patrick around, he seemed to have some potential. We can find another D. Thomas just about anywhere.

I liked what I saw out of Higgins, and Patrick went from OTA darling to Gone Pecan.

I'm guessing Dave Thomas may just retire due to his concussion probs?

It was an eye-opener for me when Marquis Johnson (a journeyman CB at best) came into camp and out-performed every CB on our roster.

I still think its mostly Spags related but that was an eye opener for sure.

Didn't Patrick play like **** last season? Oh wait....that was our entire secondary...or was that our entire DEFENSE?

lee909 02-19-2013 02:54 PM

I wonder if that's any indication we are going CB in the draft early.I'd love to see at least one 6'+ physical CB drafted.

Yes, yes, and yes.

Johnny patrick never showed any improvement, corey white struggled early but got it together and i believe elbert mack played the best out of all our corners in very limited playing time

Its a shock we would cut patrick to say how high the coaching staff were on him, maybe he had attitude problems or the coaches just thought he was the weak link

While I was never a fan of the Johnny Patrick pick, I'm pretty surprised we gave up on him so quickly. I understand a good part had to do with the cap pickle, but it certainly sends a strong message to everyone else at the same time.

Maybe it was the pics he sent to that hooker....maybe she was ugly...IDK.

Being that Johnny Patrick cost us about as much as a glorified UDFA I'd say the cap situation had nothing to do with his release. He was just awful.

His release only saved us 269,000

lee909 02-19-2013 03:13 PM

The New Orleans Saints have released veteran tight end David Thomas and waived cornerback Johnny Patrick, according to a league source.

Thomas held a salary cap number of $2.2 million with a base salary of $1.5 million for 2013, which was the final year of his contract. Patrick was only set to make $555,000 in base salary in 2013 with a cap figure around $740,000.

There are a few interesting prospects at TE that can be got 5/6/7th rounds.

Every penny counts!

Found this little pickle...

I actually vaguely remembered our draft chat about him. He didn't sound to great from the start... especially for a 3rd round pick.

I really like the crop of TE's coming this draft. Lots of athletic guys that can stretch the field and be had in the later rounds. The position has slowly evolved from the traditional blocking guys to the more athletic types this past decade. I wouldn't mind at all having our own Gronk/Hernandez attack here.

Perhaps Patrick was the locker room snitch from a while back???

Re: Holder: Saints Cut Dave Thomas, Johnny Patrick

I always liked Thomas, he always played hard and was good at both TE and FB but he is getting older and has had a bunch of concussions soo I don't think this was a bad move.

Re: Holder: Saints Cut Dave Thomas, Johnny Patrick

I think cutting Patrick is a clear indication that they are reverting back to man coverage with the DBs - even though we don't yet know who'll be the new secondary coach - since Patrick's skill-set was better suited for zone.

Who knows, maybe he'll clear the waivers?!

If that was the case then patrick robinson would have been cut weeks ago

It was an eye opener, but I felt most of our talent on defense would NEVER be starters on most other teams defense.

We saw that when we got rid of Tracy Porter and Scott Fujita, Porter got benched in Denver and Fujita who got paid tons is pretty much 2nd rate to anyone there in Cleveland, although Fujita was the best option here in New Orleans at LB behind Vilma.

The 2006 Mindset Payton has should just about overhaul 75% of the defense and rebuild it.

Damn they let Johnny Patrick go so now were even thinner at DB. So I think were going DB in free agent and draft.

Or maybe he simply can't play CB at this level. This cut was no shock to me.

Goodbye Dave, you gave up yourself for us and the game. Hopefully you managed your money well so you can have a great life ahead.

Goodbye Patrick, you gave up a lot of receptions and TDs.

If we re-sign this guy off waivers, I'm gonna root for the Clowns in week one.

I wouldn't root for the clowns if they signed Jesus...

Me neither, but if they bring back Patrick I'm gonna do it first game of the season just on principle!

Patrick Robinson isn't a bad CB and has huge upside.

17 TE's since 2006 and counting.

Re: Holder: Saints Cut Dave Thomas, Johnny Patrick

its all about the cap. Thomas i understand to a point. Patrick as a 3rd could have been held on to and moved down the depth chart. but we need money

plenty of TE on the FA market and the Draft.

CB are bit thin in the draft for man coverage but there are some nice big CB that can play man coverage. FA looks to be getting crowded this year if all the rumors are true around the NFL

we are looking for a nickle or dime guy to replace patrick. they are out there

next up to the chopping block?

I had a realtor tell me that about a house once. Now I worry when I hear the words upside and po-tential.

I haven't seen Pat Robinsons upside in the 3 years he's been here, he sucked in man coverage in GW's scheme and sucked in zone coverage in spags scheme

Yes, in his 2nd year under GW he started improving quite a bit. It looked like he was progressing nicely. He even looked to be passing Greer as our best CB. Then came Spags.

Patrick Robinson has all the tools to be a solid CB in this league. Under the right coachiong he may turn out very well. Johnny Patrick... not so much.

+1. Rob Ryan will see him for what he is in due time. It would not surprise me at all if he only see's the field in nickle packages in 2013. In my Denny Green's voice.. "he is who we thought he was'. The 'experiment' is over with PRobinson at the cornerback position as far as I'm concerned.
