Saints Hire Wesley McGriff as Secondary Coach

1 Attachment(s)
The New Orleans Saints have hired Wesley McGriff as the team’s secondary coach, Head Coach Sean Payton announced Monday.

McGriff comes to the Saints after serving as co-defensive coordinator/cornerbacks at the University of Mississippi in 2012.

McGriff, a 22-year coaching veteran in the college ranks, helped the Rebels improve from a 2-10 campaign in 2011 to a 7-6 record in 2012 including a 38-17 victory over Pittsburgh in the 2013 BBVA Compass Bowl and three more Southeastern Conference victories than the previous season.

Under McGriff’s direction in the regular season, Mississippi finished second in the SEC and in the top 15 in the NCAA in tackles for a loss per game (7.7) and sacks per game (2.8). LB Denzel Nkemdiche was named to the Football Writers Association of America All-America Team. DT Isaac Gross earned SEC All-Freshman honor from league coaches and was named to the Freshman All-America first team by CollegeFootballNews.com.

The Tifton, Ga. native has a proven track record for developing defensive backs on the collegiate level including New York Giants S Kenny Phillips, Green Bay Packers DB Sam Shields, Houston Texans CB Brandon Harris and New York Jets DB Yeremiah Bell.

Prior to joining the Rebels, McGriff spent one year at Vanderbilt where he served as defensive backs coach/recruiting coordinator and helped the program to its fifth bowl appearance. His secondary produced 12 interceptions, three returns for touchdowns, and more than 20 pass breakups. He spent four years at the University of Miami coaching defensive backs before moving to the Commodores, where he tutored Harris, Phillips and Shields. The 2010 Hurricanes defensive unit finished ranked second in the nation in pass defense. He served as recruiting coordinator/defensive backs at Baylor from 2003-06 and enjoyed his first major college stint at the University of Kentucky from 2001-02.

As the secondary coach at Eastern Kentucky in 2000, McGriff tutored Bell, who was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 2003 in the sixth round. He also previously held the role of defensive coordinator at Kentucky State and at his alma mater, Savannah State.

McGriff played outside linebacker at Savannah State for three seasons and was named 1989 conference Male Academic Athlete of the Year. He received his bachelor’s degree while graduating cum laude from Savannah State in 1900 and earned a master’s in public administration from Georgia Southern in 1993.

Now all we need is some defensive backs to coach up and we are all set.

He definitely seems to have the pedigree, so here's to hoping he and Andre Curtis can get the most out of the Saints' DBs.

Is he related to Fred?

Guess we had to geaux to the college ranks to develop our DB's; gotta love Payton for acknowledging the obvious and choosing the direct route...

Jim Mora and system coaches like him would have spent another month trying to come up with a "creative" solution to show the masses how much smarter he was than 65,000 fans in the Dome and millions on television who were watching the same games...

Yeah, they all have great "pedigree" when they come here. What else it new. I know it's the off season and our sports minds are bored, but this is really uninteresting news to me, until we see some results. Flajole had this GREAT track record, supposedly. Yeah...

ok lets see what he does for the draft. looking at a player or two he may push from Ole Miss.

instant insight on defending players from the SEC also.

Nice pick up coaching wise also

Darius Slay might be there in the 3rd, but Johnthan Banks is probably a late 1st or early 2nd rounder.

And then there's Corey Broomfield (FS), who'll probably go undrafted.

Other than those guys, there are no other DBs coming out of Ole Miss this year - naturally there are other positions of interest, but these are guys who he could be directly coaching after the draft.

True, my mistake... or actually it wasn't, because CBSSports draft prospect database lists just Mississippi State players when you choose Ole Miss as the school from which you want to see prospects from.

Top draft prospects for the 2013 draft from Ole Miss:

CB Charles Sawyer (5-11, 175)

Quote:

Sawyer proved to be one of the few bright spots in an otherwise abysmal 2011 season for the Rebels. Flipping back and forth between cornerback and free safety as injuries robbed Mississippi of its depth, Sawyer registered 70 tackles and finished third in the SEC with 13 passes defended, including four interceptions. He'd flashed the ability to be a potential shutdown cornerback a year earlier. After redshirting in 2009, Sawyer quickly developed into one of the Rebels' more reliable defenders, posting 49 tackles and four passes defensed (two interceptions) despite only starting four of 12 games. Surrounded by a relative lack of talent, Sawyer's big plays in pass defense and surprising toughness as an open field tackler (especially in run support) made him a fan favorite and Freeze quickly gravitated towards Sawyer as one of the faces of his program, bringing him to represent the university to the SEC Media junction in Birmingham, Alabama. Freeze also asked Sawyer to make another position change, moving him to the rover position in his 4-2-5 alignment. Despite his lack of size, Sawyer has the anticipation, ball skills and toughness necessary to thrive in this role. Unfortunately, there will be a delay in Sawyer's transition. As if Freeze needed any bad news prior to the season, Sawyer suffered a partially torn quad August 5. The injury is expected to keep Sawyer sidelined for at least another few weeks and could put the beginning (or more) of his 2012 season in jeopardy.

LB Mike Marry (6-2, 248)

Quote:

If Sawyer was Ole Miss' brightest star a year ago, Marry was a close second. Despite only starting nine of the team's 12 games a season ago, Marry paced the Rebels with 81 total tackles, chipping in six tackles for loss and two sacks along the way from the middle linebacker position. Marry originally signed with Ole Miss in 2009 but academics forced him to greyshirt and thus his first season of action on the field came in 2010. He saw action in ten games (one start) and finished with 22 tackles, including three for loss and a sack before breaking through a season ago. Marry possesses prototype size for inside linebacker, demonstrating the toughness to take on and fight through blocks as well as proving himself to be a strong, wrap-up tackler. He is best in a straight-line, however, showing only average agility and foot-speed, overall, struggling to beat speedy SEC ball-carriers to the edge. He also struggled with pass coverage duties a season ago, though he made improving in this area a priority over the off-season. Marry will continue at the middle linebacker position in Freeze's 4-2-5 scheme. The alignment may cap the number of tackles Marry will have in 2012 as the action isn't funneled to the middle linebacker quite as much as it is in a normal 4-3 alignment. However, it could result in more plays behind the line of scrimmage, which could put the Rebels' talented linebacker in position to make more impactful plays.

Might not actually be the top two prospects, but whatever.
