Black makes the Practice Squad!

Article from Espn Newswire:

Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans Saints put six players on the practice squad on Monday and had agreements with two more who were with other teams during training camp.

The six, who were cut to make the mandatory 53-player limit, are fullback Nate Schurman, guard Chad Setterstrom, wide receiver Nathan Black, tackle Ben Archibald, cornerback Fred Booker and linebacker Billy Strother. ^------<

BACKUP QB: The second quarterback spot on the Saints roster still belongs to Todd Bouman, despite a less than impressive preseason.

"Right now going into the season Todd is No. 2," coach Jim Haslett said. "Probably more than anything because Todd is the holder for snaps on field goals and extra points. But if Aaron got hurt that would be open to discussion."

Bouman and J.T. O'Sullivan got more playing time than normal in the preseason because of an injury to starter Aaron Brooks.

In the final exhibition game Bouman played most of the game and completed 7 of 15 for 73 yards. He was intercepted once and sacked five times.

O'Sullivan completed 7 of 10 for 94 yards and a touchdown. He had no interceptions but was sacked twice.

"In Todd and J.T's defense, they got no reps at all in practice," Haslett said. "I'm not saying that's why they played poorly, but we threw them out there with maybe 10 reps." ^------<

INJURIES: The Saints have three players listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks. Defensive end Darren Howard has a bulging disc in his neck. Haslett said it is not a career-ending, or even season-ending injury. Howard thinks he will be able to play, but Haslett said they would watch the injury for the rest of the week before making a decision.

Cornerback Jason Craft has a high ankle sprain. Safety Deveron Harper has a ham string strain. ^------<

CAMP KUDDOS: Haslett rated the just-completed training camp as the best since he's been in New Orleans.

Players made great progress, he said. On the minus side was the injury to starting quarterback Aaron Brooks that prevented him from getting much playing time in the preseason. ^------<

OPTIMISTIC HASLETT: Haslett said he's always worried, but over all he feels very good about the team and the upcoming season.

"Everybody this time of year feels good about their football team," Haslett said. "There's no reason I shouldn't feel good about this one."
