Unless Daniel becomes Brees' replacement in 2015

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I'm just asking because if Daniel bolts before Brees is done in the NFL we need to start grooming Brees' replacement, a qb that will be a starter in three years like Rodgers was when he was drafted by packers. ...

Unless Daniel becomes Brees' replacement in 2015

I'm just asking because if Daniel bolts before Brees is done in the NFL we need to start grooming Brees' replacement, a qb that will be a starter in three years like Rodgers was when he was drafted by packers. I mean I know Brees could have a injury at anytime(eventually it happens, Manning and Brady already experienced it) and I think if it happened Daniel would do well. But we need a qb who will be ready to win many games within two years of Brees stepping down. i know this is a long ways away but we need to start grooming his replacement. A qb that comes to mind is a guy like Connor Shaw from South Carolina who is a senior next year I believe or Aaron Murray in this upcoming draft. Daniel would be the best bet overall but I believe he could leave before he gets his chance. It would be best imo to trade Daniel for a serviceable backup qb like Clausen(Yes, I think has what it takes to succeed), Mallet, or, if he takes less money, Flynn. While, also still drafting a qb to groom as Brees replacement. I hope Daniel decides he will wait for Brees retirement and begin his starter career as a saint but he may not and we will need that guy in place. One thing that nags me is the haters talking about how we are on the decline and when Brees is done, we're done. I am tired of hearing this and we certainly cannot let Matt Ryan take over this division when Brees is done. I can only hope Payton stays forever or at least a few more years beyond Brees but prob will not.

I think we pick somebody up late next year or 2015 to take over from Brees longterm. You dont want to waste these new rookie contract by having the player sit on the bench and then have to renew a deal at big numbers only a year or so after they start playing.

After seeing last years rookie QB's I'm not worried about "grooming" anyone. College does a good job if we do a good job drafting.

Makes one wonder why pay ANY player more than god to play if they come so well prepared.

Well, to be fair, it is more of a recent development or trend, albeit perhaps cyclical too.

Re: Unless Daniel becomes Brees' replacement in 2015

The other thing about Chase is that for the time being at least, he seems very happy to do these one-year, slightly-increasing contracts, every year, which is very helpful to the team in terms of capology and taking care of the other players. You sign a young exciting rookie QB now to take the place of Drew in 4 years, then you need a long contract for that, and each year has to get bigger, at a faster rate than Chase. And we know Chase will just re-negotiate each year based on what is happening with the cap and the team. Not many people here noticed, because they were too busy FREAKING OUT about Drew and hating on him for being "greedy," etc., but the Saints gave Chase a nice healthy raise the same year they gave Drew his big new contract, made him a "million dollar man" for the first time -- so to me that shows the Saints wanted to send Chase a message that they value him too, and see him as a part of the picture...but I think he knows it's always gonna be year to year for him, that's just a part of the life of a backup in this situation.

So I think it's a couple of years away.

SP seems to always be looking for a good qb of the scrap heap or in the backend/FA of the draft. he will come up with a gem sooner then later.

if the defense improves chase may see the field more

It no longer takes 2 to 3 years to develop a QB.

It takes about 1 traning camp.

We're 5 years away from needing Brees' replacement.

At the same time, though, very few of these new qbs have yet to win a ring. The only qbs from any class after 04 that have won are Rodgers and Flacco and Flacco is lucky he plays for the ravens and there's only five legit teams in the AFC that will beat anybody else in the playoffs(exception is probably Denver against San Diego if they ever go back). The ravens know who they can beat and who they need to play smart against in the playoffs. They also got gifted second chances against teams who had played their hand earlier and Ray Lewis doesnt forget. This is a "I know what you did last time" playoff era we have. These other qbs will have to go through a lot to win. CK is lucky to play on a versatile team that is defensive and Wilson is lucky to play in one of the toughest stadiums for road teams. QBs like Cam, Tannehill, Locker will realize when/if they make the playoffs it won't be so easy considering their overall teams. RG 3 and Dalton already are witnessing this.
