Cap Hits by Position
Normally when we look at salary cap hits I know I look at poor preforming players or large hits by default. An alternate look would be to look at what positions you have large amounts of cap hit tied into. This gives you a view from players that you may want to keep but do not need because you already have an over abundance at that position.
Some teams do not look at a specific player but look at a position, basically the Patriots will not spend more than x at TE, then work from there, regardless of how good someone thinks they are the team has a limit for that position based on perceived importance) and a player has to fit in or go somewhere else.. It takes the personal out and makes it more of a business decision. It makes the "I like him" decision into "we do not need him". because someone may be a good price at WR but we just do not need another. Ranked Highest to Lowest positions by Cap Hit, then highest to lowest at that position. D.E. -18.6M Smith Jordan Wilson Richardson Romeus L.B - 18.4M Vilma Lofton Hawthorne Herring Chamberline Johnson Broughton QB - 17.4M Brees Safety - 13.2M Harper Jenkins Quddus Bush White Nelson Guard - 13M Evans Grubbs Henry Oleson Tiller Lee WR - 12.9M Moore Colston Toon Morgan parker Cadet Givens Fayson Tanner Hakim CB - 8.8M Greer Robinson Turner Steed Davis RB - 8.2M Sproles Thomas Ingram T - 4.4M Strief Brown Jones Harris DT - 4.3M Bunkley Johnson Hicks Walker P - 2.9M Morestead K - 2.6M Hartley TE - 2.5M Graham Higging Collins Dead money Thomas patrick Tennant J. Thomas Folkerts Just by looking at it this way I can see "Positions" we have way too much cap hit and too many players at. Example: Seeing we tied up 37M in LB/DE last year for the worst defense in history really turns my stomach. |
Re: Cap Hits by Position
wow....
DE and LB are the highest capped positions on our team and they are probably the worst part of our team also That hurts |
Re: Cap Hits by Position
Looking at it from this angle I would have to ask Loomis... WTF?
Do we need? 10 WR 6 S 7 LB No Wonder we can not afford a tackle. |
Re: Cap Hits by Position
Thanks for the breakdown...
Really shines some light on things. The top 3 of 4 spots are D... Perhaps the worst ROI ever seen in business. |
That makes for some real ugly reading.
I'm sure other teams look as bad but man that horrible especially at safety |
Re: Cap Hits by Position
Whats scarier than the abundance of dead weight is that we are just over the cap and do not have:
Bu QB Bu Kicker Bu Punter |

However, NONE of those salary's are below 406k/year. Practice squad guys do not make 406k a year. Bottom 4 WR 1.6M The highest paid player in the NFL on a practice squad is 300k/year Some examples of what PS guys make in a season on the bottom New England Patriots have top-paid NFL practice squad - NFL.com How much does a shrimp po-boy in Alabama cost you anyway brother? You may need to move. |

The following 8 WR's (1 is a RB) combined are 3.9 million Thats not much more than what we pay one single punter. :p |
