Herring never panned out and it was obvious he wasn't worth the money. Now, go cut Smith, Harper and Vilma. Then you'll have some money to spend.

Saints save $1.5 million against the cap as LB Will Herring is released

The move comes as New Orleans fights to get beneath the salary cap. Other moves are expected as the Saints are still roughly $3.2 million over the cap with 15 minutes to go before the new league year begins.

George Mavrikes said Herring decided against taking an offered pay cut to stay. Herring is a 4-3 linebacker and the Saints are moving to a 3-4 defense under new coordinator Rob Ryan.

Herring was a good special teamer, and unfortunately his career with the Saints began pretty badly with him spending most of his first season on the IR, but in the end $1.6M was too much to pay for a ST player.

I think he'll sign with another team quite quickly.
