Re: Saints Sign Ben Watson, Re sign Humber

In the grand scheme of things, it's a mediocre signing. But it's the mediocre signings that help solidify a ball club. We could have done a lot worse than sign Ben Watson who fills a role on our ball club that we needed to address.

-Can he block? Check.
-Can he catch? Check.
-Does he fill a need? Check.
-Does he play special teams? Check.
-Was he cheap? Check.

Looks like a winner to me.

Should be probably double vet minimum. I can live with that.

Sounds about right on the $. Love having a vet like Watson bc Graham seems to lose his focus at times (evident in drops last year).

Look for an UDFA TE signing as well.

Anyone think Charles Brown will have his hands full now?? :p

I can't imagine it being more than 5.5/3.

Yeah, solid pick up... guess we pick up one in UDFA as well... another basketball converted players perhaps.

Definitely not a clone. Watson is a much better receiver. Thomas had good hands but no athleticism. Watson can stretch it down field a bit more, and that makes him a very nice player to have as a backup. We can also run some two tight end sets, and the defense will have to respect both players. with Thomas, you knew he was in there to block. His catches were usually for very minimal yardage.

I like the signing. Just don't know how much we're paying him yet.

Re: Saints Sign Ben Watson, Re sign Humber

i watched him for years here in NE so i will hope for 100% from him. that there is the issue. not what he can do but what he does
so from here on out he falls into the gag rule for me.

"He's versatile," Payton said. "He's one of those players when you watch the tape: he run blocks well, he's a threat in the passing game, he plays with great leverage, he plays with great experience. He does a lot of things well. When we watched the film on him, we kept getting back to how many times we were putting a tackle in the game to report eligible. I think his signing will maybe give us more versatility."
Sean Payton on Ben Watson

Payton loves his versatile players, mismatches and problem causers for defenses

He can block and catch? Something else to make the defenses struggle.

Probably, but there's also Higgins who may have progressed enough to be considered a true #3 at the TE position.

Higgins looked pretty good that last preseason.

And then there's Humber, is it usual for a special teamer to be second on the team in tackles?

Humber only had 9 tackles last year.

Are you thinking of Harper?

OK, poorly worded by the article.

They meant to say he finished 2nd in total tackles on special teams.

Not a punter, that Luke Johnson was a udfa in 2006.
Luke Johnson, P, NFL Draft Prospect

Re: Saints Sign Ben Watson, Re sign Humber

Like this. Makes us more dangerious on the mismatches. Watson is a good blocker for a run play but considered #3-4 TE in FA, so for all the defence knows SP could empty the back field when the defense is set to stop the run, because he can catch also. Really solid second.

Okay, made me look. The sad thing is it was somewhat believable to me.

The Ben Watson signing might be the most important signing on offense this offseason when you see just exactly what can be done with him, not to mention, even at 32 he can still be productive in the passing game.

We seen what the Patriots do with 2 good TEs.

It could possibly be. the guy has pro bowl talent and could have many pro bowls to his credit by now. the question is can he finally pull it all together, stay focused and make a run at the end of his career?

it's not the skills that worry me it's his mind set

Yep, coming out of an offense run by Weeden and overshadowed by one of the lousiest minds in all of football, Burgermeister Meisterburger. However hope can be a wonderful thing and if Sean/Drew can't give him that, no one can.

Ben Watson excellent football player, can run block, help pass block, good receiver just a good all around football player. Certainly can help the LT position especially if their going with Charles Brown. This is great addition to the Saints offense, much better than Dave Thomas.

Considering our desperate need for tackles, if he can't block, our heretofore unnamed QB backup better be ready 1st week of training camp.

He can run block and assist in the pass blocking, good smart football player.
