You're right Fin I guess I am being a little too harsh.

I'm just a little frustrated with the production from our first round choices. They may eventually be worthy of that 1st........Ingram can still be the man as can Jordan. And I still have a little hope from the rest of them but my expectations aren't as high as they once were.
However, we've got a smart new DC and maybe he can evaluate top flight talent for a change.

It seems like forever since we had a second round draft pick. Although Hicks is looking good for last years first pick which came in the third round.

That is where we are usually money. In those mid to late round draft picks is where we get pretty good results. And yes, we do pretty well with UDFA's and dlp came from someone else's practice squad(Atlanta I believe). We know how to bring in talent from small schools and which players to take a gamble on.

I just wish we were better at evaluating talent in the early rounds.

What I am pointing out is "what that entails".. In this case the devil is in the details.

Smith took a $6M pay cut for this year... it wasn't any restructure that gave us cap relief. Cutting Smith next year leaves us with 3.35M in dead money. To understand what that means, this year we only have 1.1M in dead money.

If Harper does exactly what Smith did that would still leave us with 3M dead money next year if he is cut.

Both "restructures" combined if both are cut would leave us with 6.3M in dead money for 2014. Paying both of them would result in an increase cap hit of 6M.

So when you think you are saving 10M next year on Smith, you are not.. it will cost us 5M to replace him + 3M in dead money so next year we take an 8M hit because of Smiths contract... so that is not a full 10M in savings. It is more like 4M and Brees contract goes up 1M to that savings is cut to 3M.

Here is a list of Ballooning Cap Hits for 2014 that have huge amounts of dead money associated with them: 11M increase in Cap hit from these three players next year.

Jari Evans - 2014 Cap hit 11M (+5M from 2013) Dead money if he is cut 9M
Ben Grubs - 2014 Cap Hit 9M (+4M from 2013) Dead Money 9M
Curtis Lofton - 2014 Cap Hit 5.2M (+2.1M from 2013) his 2015 Cap hit is 9M

In a year when Strief, Graham, and Jenkins come up for FA we can not afford to have 6.3M in dead money.

As far as I know, restructuring does not alleviate dead money, which is why Smith had to take a cut in salary this year.

The moral of the story is that if we think we are bad in 2013 with Cap space... wait until 2014.
Have you been taking lessons from Loomie? I think you just became the de facto BnG capologist!

Not even close. I do enjoy trying to figure it all out though.

Re: Remaining salary-cap space for each NFL team

I look at the numbers for next year and. I wonder how do they keep Jenkins, Graham and Streif.
Can they extend the contracts of Will Smith and Harper to reduce the cap hits for next year. I've posted this web site on other threads that shows the contracts of the players on the roster. Will smith has a real ugly number considering the age of the player and production.

For Smith and Harper I feel like it is more of a question of "want" then "can". If neither play any better this year than they have the last two seasons...

Some times you need to cut bait.

This is my opinion after running through a lot of scenarios, ignore salary.... Focus 100% on bonuses and dead money. That is the area the teams live
or die by.

Cutting them next year would be the thing to do. I would have probably released them this year, I know it's complicated.

Some teams chose to drag things out as long as they can: Cowboys -
They think every year is a Super Bowl possibility for them.

Other teams face all the music in one year: Colts - cut all the bait and drafted a QB. Did very well considering.

The Raiders just keep screwing them selves.
