Coming to a city near you: The NFL (National Feminine League)

WAKE FOREST, NC, April 1, 2013 ― The issue of unnecessary roughness in the NFL is nothing new. However, today’s NFL has mounted a seemingly hyper-cautious campaign to eliminate injury in the sport. NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Lambert, in a Monday Night Football interview in 1979, was quoted saying, “Quarterbacks should wear dresses.”

Ninety percent of the players in the NFL today were not even born when Lambert made that epic statement. Lambert’s words were made in frustration when the NFL imposed fines on him for making hard (but perfectly clean and legal) hits on opposing quarterbacks.

Curious about Jack Lambert? He was from the “Old School” and played the game as it was meant to be played: hard hitting, with the strategic intent of intimidating (not injuring) the opponent. Watch this clip:


In a world that is increasingly “politically-correct,” consider this: Football is a man’s sport. Safety equipment is designed, marketed and sold to accommodate the physical interactions between players. For those who may not know it (and I regret that there may actually be some in this category), professional football is defined as a contact sport. Not only that, but players may get hurt in the process. That is part of the game. It is also a part of life. Why? Death is certain, but life is not. Life is all about risk.

I'm not going to disagree with your sentiment that the NFL may be going overboard to protect players. I'd like to point out that Jack Lambert played in an era where a Linebacker was an all pro with 5.4 speed at 220 pounds. Today, the average LB is 245 and runs sub 5 seconds. That is a huge increase in kinetic energy at impact. Factor in stronger/lighter equipment than from Lambert's era, and one gets a massive dynamic shift in the potential for injury.

Quarterbacks are usually stationary targets and barely aware of the potential attackers until it is too late to avoid the hit. The NFL may not have it right on the method of protecting the player, but they should do something, because, and I'm talking about the Saints only here, god forbid that one of our All Star tackles whiffs and some numbskull LB has a free full speed shot at Brees' head. We won't have a team for 3 years due to his cap hit.

Ya know Xan, I believe this is the first time I see someone with a familiar mindset on this.

My solution is quite simple, sslllooowwww the game down. Mandatory knee braces for ALL players but kickers. It slows them a little and protects the knees which are the leading cause of disability among football players.

If knee braces do not slow them down enough, put ankle braces on them also... Hobble them until they do not hurt each other. Dont change the rules, just slow the players a little.

I'm with xan and oak on this. I don't have a problem with the powers that be trying to protect the players. Have they gone overboard? In some regards, yes. But, as xan pointed out, players today are bigger, stronger, faster (cue 6 million dollar man music). It wasn't too many years ago as I watched players who seemingly were more concerned with getting on SportsCenter Highlights than playing the game. They were going out of their way to lay down the BIG HIT. I said to myself then if something isn't done someone will, not may, but will get killed on the field. I loved the Steel Curtain of the 70's. Lambert was my favorite and if you'll notice in the attached video the majority of the hits he made were legal and with his head up. So it can be done. Too many players just got it in their heads that they can't play the game unless they can use their heads as a weapon. They got too used to lowering the head to make the massive hit so it became commonplace.
At the end of the day, you can't take the violence out of a violent sport and the guys who play this game know early on what they have signed up for. But I do believe that players need to re-learn how to tackle without thinking they have to decapitate the opposing player to do it.

These bigger, faster, stronger players are not Bionic.

They get this way by using PEDs.

They are human, and humans this big, fast and strong are not meant to impact each other!

I see people in my gym use these things. I have been offered them numerous times.

I see average dudes and chicks get "yoked" in a few months on this stuff.

If anyone doesn't believe this? You are stupid or in denial!

Great points! It was a different time back then, the players had different mindsets from the players of today, the game was more of a 'grind-it out/battle of wills' type that stressed/coached football fundamentals. Today it's about speed, hype, flash & endorsements.
