In a different light

There's a lot of talk about drafting a worthy successor to Drew and that that shouldn't happen for a few more years. This is because Drew hopefully has some good years ahead of him and a good QB drafted out of college shouldn't need much time to be ready to stand behind center.

Now here's the question:
If Rob does his job then how are we going to be in a draft position to actually be able to draft a worthy successor?

We need some new stuff to argue about...

Re: In a different light

Drew himself was a 2nd rd pick so you can find a hidden gem if you scout one that fits your style or scheme not to mention their mental make-up! Colby Cameron, Jordan Rogers, or Sean Renfree one of those guys will be around late for the taken and all 3 with Cameron and Renfree would be the hopefuls because Rogers is older he's already 24 and going on 25! So I'd rather the younger Cameron he is perfect for grooming into a successor!

It is a little early for this........but that's what we do. We draft in 2 years for Drews successor.

That's quite a conundrum there Seer1. As the draft comes before the season starts and no one will know how well Rob does his job until the season is over.

As to some questions about why this keeps getting revisited...

That's easy, ill answer it with a question. If Drew brees takes a Joe Montana career ending hit on opening day, what are you putting on the field for the remainder of this season and next season?

I live by the adage that 2 is 1 and 1 is none.

Maybe this question will help. Would you rather our next starting QB learn under Brees or McCown? If we wait for our next QB and Drew gets hurt, McCown will be teaching the rookie.

Re: In a different light

I think we should have 2 quality QB,s someone has to be ready to step up seems like i remember our current number 2 having a good game against us previously and is probably just insurance on the Saints part for now. I think they will get someone in here either late draft or undrafted. There is a real need here and agree with Oak.

Although, if (insert any deity you wish) forbid something were to happen to Brees taking him out for the season, it would sure open up a lot of cap room to try and find a temporary replacement. And I think SP could do quite a lot with the right temporary replacement, especially if the defense wasn't forcing the offense's hand, so the speak.

Re: In a different light

We couldn't possibly find the cap room necessary to have a back up who could even put us in a position to compete if Brees went down. The guy is close to the majority of the reason we have offense. We keep Chase we don't make the playoffs. We sign a quality veteran back up like Cassel or Fitzpatrick we don't make the playoffs.

I've said it before, our back up is irrelevant. Brees goes down we are done. We may as well get a young cheap project guy like Chase was because anything else is a waste of money. I doubt we can expect a situation like New England had where when Brady went down Cassel kept them in contention. New England was a strong defense at the time and a better top to bottom roster. We'd be more like Indy with Curtis Painter.

Re: In a different light

I don't know, we find a bit of a raw rookie that Sean can work with like he does with Drew and we might could limp along until Drew's feeling better. Part of this being on Rob's shoulders too of course.
