Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
1 Attachment(s)
Saints signed OT Jason Smith, formerly of the Jets, to a one-year contract.
Was once very highly touted but busted out. I think a few here were pretty high on him coming out of Baylor. |
Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
Anyone know anything about this guy?

Jason Smith, OT for the New York Jets at NFL.com Smith’s release adds gives him another boost in the race for biggest draft bust ever. The No. 2 pick in 2009 had no chance at collecting a pending $12 million roster bonus after spending last season behind Austin Howard on the depth chart. Smith saw sparing use as an extra tight end, but that was hardly enough for the Jets to keep him around. The Jets originally acquired Smith in a trade with the St. Louis Rams prior to the 2012 regular season. New York sent tackle Wayne Hunter to St. Louis, in exchange for the underachieving Smith. Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
The Jets "staff" is questionable to me at best.... Payton will get him going in the right direction

Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
Second pick in 2009 by St Louis. Blah, blah, blah. Total bust, seat out by Safford. Traded to the Jets. Serious concussion(s). Released, now he's with us. I think he's a look-see kind of guy.

Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
He was suppose to be Orlando Pace's successor for the Rams and is/was considered extremely athletic. He was the number 2 pick in the 2009 draft.
Looking back at that draft, man were their quite a few bust in the top 10. |
Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
Smith, 6-5, 308, was originally chosen by the St. Louis Rams as the second overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft out of Baylor. The Dallas, Texas native has appeared in 45 career games with 26 starts at both left and right tackle. Prior to being acquired by the Jets at the conclusion of training camp in 2012, with Smith playing tackle for his first three seasons in St. Louis, then-Rams running back Steven Jackson exceeded 1,100 yards each season between 2009-11. After appearing in eight games with five starts as a rookie, Smith opened 15 games at right tackle in 2010, as Jackson rushed for 1,241 yards and Sam Bradford became the second rookie quarterback to throw for more than 3,500 yards. Smith served as a blocking tight end and backup tackle in New York.
At Baylor, Smith transitioned from tight end to tackle as a sophomore and started 39 of 42 contests during his career (24 at left tackle, seven at right tackle, and eight at tight end). As a senior, he earned first-team All-America honors from the Football Writers Association and was a unanimous first-team All-Big 12 conference selection as his blocking efforts helped Baylor rank 21st in the nation and third in the conference in rushing, averaging 197.75 yards per game, while surrendering only 3.5 sacks. Smith graduated in 2008 with a bachelor of science degree in education and attended graduate school during his final season. Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
Maybe Drew could light him up and motivate the young fellow?
|
Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
It doesn't hurt to have depth and competition at that position.

Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
A nice camp body.

He definitely makes an interesting camp body. We made serviceable players with guys that don't even have a fraction of his athletic ability.

Neauuxxxxxxxx....
Nice Guy, Soft Head - He's Got Concussion/Toughness Issues... He and Charlie Brown should share a room... |

...and if we wanted reclamation projects...
...WTH didn't we sign Rolando McClain?!? |

Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
IDK, I do like that they added depth and competition at a key position, and I'm hoping that Smith will be a another "diamond in the rough" for the Saints - but I'm being cautiously optimistic since we don't really know how big of a part Kromer played in the O-line player development or if he was more of a x's and o's guy.
I guess the odds are stacked pretty high in favor of him not making the final 53. |
Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
He could become the comeback player of the year without injuries too. Im in on giving him a shot. No. 2 pick in the 09 draft. Lets roll with it hes got a camp he can prove himself.

Coming out of Baylor, I thought he was the real deal but boy he faded fast.

Maybe he just needs a second chance.

Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
Well he obviously has the physical talent. You don't go that early in the draft without it. the important thing is to analyze why he hasn't been more successful and see if that is something that can be remedied.

Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
Loomis is a freaking genius.
This move puts the FO in a much better place for draft day. Now every other GM/drafting committee knows that we have addressed every position of need through FA and we now have the luxury of being able to draft more along the lines of BPA. When the other GMs know this they also know that they can't count on us to skip any player who may be high on our board, as well as theirs. Which, IMO, makes us ideal candidates for a trade down with several other teams who may be fearful that we could just snatch that player that they covet. And hey, if we end up with Tavon Austin, or we really gonna complain? Loomis is the man. |
Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
Or all other GMs "think" we have all holes filled and Loomis is going after a LT with out concussion history first round.
Something us going to have to give very soon. With 2.2M in cap space we are short on financial space. |
Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
I like it. As mentioned, you don't go #2 overall because you never showed you could be a NFL player. This is a small risk big reward type move and yes, does leverage us a bit with that pick.
We need to free up some cap room though as Oak states and I think that comes in the form of possibly a Roman Harper situation. Does anyone else seem us packaging Harper and our pick to a team with cap room to shift slightly in the draft? I can see us doing that and targeting Vaccaro with our pick. |
Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
He will make the team but I don't see him being the Saints future tackle. I want be surpise if we still drafted a tackle or bring someone else in but hey he may come around and be the answer.

he's the answer is the question is who's the backup
|
Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
Give him a thicker freaking helmet!
|
Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
Nice to read an optimistic post! I agree, it's a low risk-big reward type of signing, plus you gotta think of the motivation of having a chance to play for the all mighty SP and the Saint's vaunted offence in their comeback year. Not sure what this means for the draft, I feel like we will still take the BPA...hoping that's an explosive OLB!
|
Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
I really don't think Jason Smith plays even a minuscule part in what way we decide to go in the draft. Right now he's just another camp body on a non-guaranteed contract.

I personally see Ivory as a more movable player, and the benefit of packaging him in a trade would be that his whole $2M would come off the books without any dead money. |
Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
no long injury history? that would be a step in the right direction.
after going in the first round to a backup might have kicked some sense into him. another solid high reward move with a medium risk factor due to his starting experience |
Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
Keep them coming Mickey.......some of them will work out great. Just keep looking.
|
Re: Saints sign Jason Smith, OT
He may be a steal remember Bushrod and Jarmmal Brown was decent tackles Drew made them in to Pro bowlers the way he moves in the pocket.
