New Orleans Saints third-round pick: John Jenkins, defensive tackle, 6-4, 346.
Strengths: It may not be necessary to have a massive nose guard to clog up the middle in Rob Ryan's new 3-4 defense, but having a player like Jenkins may not hurt. Jenkins is a load to move inside while his thick build and strong legs can push offensive linemen into the backfield. He also has a bull rush that is hard to contend with in the trenches. Jenkins has the ability to fight through double teams and occupy blockers to allow the linebackers to make plays, which will be key in this defense. Weaknesses: The 3-4 scheme usually works best with a smaller and more athletic nose tackle who can move around. Jenkins moves well but his mass makes it easy for him to get caught up between blockers. He also doesn't seem to have great endurance and tires fast. And when he is winded his pad level rises which will make it easy for NFL offensive lineman to move him around. Jenkins also isn't a particularly strong interior pass rusher. Stats: Jenkins had 50 tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack to earn All-SEC honors last season. In his first season with the Bulldogs, the junior college transfer from Gulf Coast Community College had 28 tackles and three sacks while making seven starts. Jenkins ran a 5.21 40-yard dash and bench pressed 30 reps of 225 pounds during the NFL Scouting Combine. A quick look at New Orleans Saints draft pick John Jenkins | NOLA.com |

Re: A quick look at New Orleans Saints draft pick John Jenkins
Dropping a Bit of personal insight on this here... As a Former D1 Nosetackle From a 3-4 Defense I can tell you his best bet is to Shed 50 Pounds ... After watching him for a good hour and a half He reminds me alot of myself , Flashing greatness at one time and getting entirely taken out of the play at others having the perfect angle on Ballcarriers but being too Slow to capitilize upon the moment.
His 40 Time ( Speed , Agility , Quickness , Finesse Moves , Power Moves , Passrush , Endurance ) Would greatly improve to a Cameron Wake / Julius Peppers type of Defender. |

He will be groomed during this first year to become the player Rob Ryan needs for a change of pace guy in the interior - losing some weight wouldn't hurt the transition to go along smoother.

He has a lot of things to work on, He gets pushed out of the play far too easy for a guy his size

J Jenkins shed 40#s and is down to 330 from 370. I think that shows commitment. I would get this guy into MMA training or hook him up with Mackie Shilstone to work on his endurance. He gives us a good rotation Bunkley, Hicks, Jenkins.
