Former Tulane quarterback Ryan Griffin won’t be leaving New Orleans, it turns out. The Green Wave senior agreed on an undrafted free agent contract with the New Orleans Saints, he said on Saturday.
He had a private workout with the Saints earlier this spring and was familiar with the organization thanks to Green Wave coach Curtis Johnson, a former wide receivers coach with the Saints. Johnson runs the same offense at Tulane, where Johnson just finished his first season as head coach. Griffin was projected by many outlets to be a sixth or seventh round selection in the 2013 NFL draft, but many teams passed on passers throughout the draft and Griffin wasn’t taken. If he were, he would have been the first Green Wave quarterback since J.P. Losman was drafted by the Buffalo Bills with the 22nd overall pick in the 2004 NFL draft. Tulane has had two other signature passers get drafted. Patrick Ramsey was drafted in 2002 with the 32nd overall pick by the Washington Redskins and Shaun King was a second-round pick in 1999 (50th overall pick) by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Griffin passed for more than 9,000 yards at Tulane and made 39 career starts. His freshman year he made school history by setting records in passing yards (1,382), touchdowns (nine), completions (141) and attempts (222). He was still setting records this past fall, Griffin threw for a school-record 466 yards on Oct. 27th against UAB, breaking Patrick Ramsey’s single-game passing yardage record of 447 with his 32-of-42 passing afternoon. Ramsey set the mark against Army in 1999. A week later, Griffin bettered that mark, breaking the record again with 476 yards against Rice. Griffin finished his career at Tulane completing 836-of-1,396 passes for 9,026 yards and 56 touchdowns with 35 interceptions. Re: Saints sign QB Ryan Griffin
He should already be familiar with the offense thanks to Curtis Johnson. I really don't care who the backup is. Drew goes down, Saints are done.
