We learned just how important Payton was. Don't forget the addition of Spags and his system - the one players clearly didn't buy into .

all i want to see is his football smarts. i hope they are high to reduce the learning curve. he is a project but how much?

push this kid into the ground, ride his butt, force feed him whatever it takes to get a grip on how long this project will take.

I should hope if he's a good coach, he's a good teacher. That's what a coach is. He's not going to call plays. I'm not worried about it, I've said many times that position coaches are largely overrated.

Everybody is wondering if we can replace Kromer, but when you look back, guys like Evans, Nicks, Stinchcomb, and Goodwin and Grubbs who have been our best linemen over the years were all established before the tenure of Kromer. Gotta have the players, as no coach is a miracle worker. Every position coach teaches the same basic principles. I'm sure the approach varies somewhat, but we still have our head coach. That's where all the brains come in.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.

Everybody is wondering if we can replace Kromer, yet look at how Dennis Allen has fared in Oakland. Gotta have the players. Every position coach teaches the same basic principles. I'm sure the approach varies somewhat, but we still have our head coach. That's where all the brains come in.
I think thats mostly true, but you do have some coaches who are better teachers than coaches. Rick Venturi was a very highly respected position coach, or teacher. But when he became the defensive coordinator, he didn't fare so well.

I view coaching as a mix of teaching who you have and scheming based on what you have.

Yeah, it is a mixed bag at times. Though I think some guys are just products of coaching good talent, and don't really stand out at any position they coach.

I edited my comment above. I don't think the Dennis Allen reference really drove home the point I wanted to make.

Re: Terron Armstead is the most intriguing and important rookie on the New Orleans Saints roster

According to NFL.COM, This guys weaknesses as they put it can be solved in the weight room and a little coaching. He was rated as the 6th overall tackle in the draft but by season end very well may be the best tackle of his class. IMO I think he will be the best tackle the Saint's have had since big Willie provided he does what he's supposed to do.

STRENGTHS
Armstead is a fantastic athlete for the position. He is light on his feet in pass protection, and nimble when on the move. Agile, moves well in space, shows the quickness to get to the second level and cut off linebackers. Has been asked to pull all the way across the line and has shown effectiveness in doing so. Bends and redirects well. Extends his arms to keep pass rushers at bay. Not overwhelmed by defensive twists and stunts. Does a good job of selling play fakes, draws, and screens.
WEAKNESSES
Needs to improve lower body strength. Can get bull rushed back. Faced sub-par competition. Needs to speed up hands, and be more consistent with his aiming point. Gets to the second level quickly, but will struggle to locate his target, gets lost in space. Will lunge at defenders with his head down in the run game.

Looks like all the negatives are coachable.

I'm more worried about the painkiller thing. Don't know which of the coaching staff was sleeping with rogger's wife, but I hope they've stopped.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Armstead starting before the season's out and hopefully not due to injuries.
