Roman Harper has a Renegotiated Contract
1 Attachment(s)
Has anyone seen the details?!?
NFL Transactions Report Update New Orleans Saints safety Roman Harper was a late arrival at Thursday's Organized Team Activity session, and we might know why now. Harper signed a renegotiated contract Thursday, according to a league source and the NFL.com's transaction page. The Saints added one more year to Harper's contract as it now expires in 2015. Harper's base salaries for his new deal are as follows: 2013 - $840,000; 2014 - $2.35 million; 2015 - $2.7 million. The Saints saved $3.44 million against this year's salary cap by signing a new deal with Harper. He will count $3.66 million against the cap now, down from $7.1 million. Already $2.6 million of Harper's base salary was guaranteed this season as the contract stipulation was triggered on the third day of the league year in March. Harper took a pay cut of $1.5 million this year as part of the deal (from $5.35 million to $3.85 million). But it was a win-win now that he gets almost all of the money up front and doesn't have to worry about being released as a cost-saving measure. Harper received a signing bonus of $2.91 million, plus a base salary of $840,000 in 2013. He also kept his $100,000 workout bonus. Harper's 2014 base salary will drop from $6 million to $2.35 million, with another $800,000 in bonuses. His cap number will drop from $7.9 million in 2014 to $5.87 million. This will help the Saints a little bit as they were to carry nearly the league's highest cap cost with $145.5 million committed for 2014 before Harper's restructured deal. Harper's 2015 base salary will be $2.7 million that year, with another $800,000 in bonuses and a cap figure of $4.47 million. Re: Roman Harper has a Renegotiated Contract
Well I know it's gotten hostile in here while debating Roman Harper's value to the team...
Even though we disagree on conclusions, analysis - most here are pretty smart folks and the general consensus was that Harper had not played up to what was a bad contract issued by Mickey Loomis... That fact, coupled with the selection of Vacarro signals a transition away from the dynamic duo as we've known them... Now, if Jenkins could tap into that playmaking ability that he's shown rare glimpses on a consistent basis - then we'll have two contracts in the near future (i.e. Graham, Jenkins) to show account... Otherwise, add Safety among the early round draft picks for next season... But I'm wondering if they have O2 on standby during the Uber Payton OTA Conditioning Circuits... |
Re: Roman Harper has a Renegotiated Contract
Will be interesting to hear more about this. Probably Loomis working to free up space if we need to make some moves.

Re: Roman Harper has a Renegotiated Contract
Very interested in seeing the details of the renegotiated contract.

Re: Roman Harper has a Renegotiated Contract

Ian Rapoport @RapSheet2m
#Saints S Roman Harper signed a extension that includes $4M fully guaranteed in Year 1. Was set to make $5.25M in '13. No full details yet Ian Rapoport @RapSheet 15m My understanding is that Roman Harper now is signed through 2015, so he tacked on an extra year to his deal. Should help Saints cap-wise Ian Rapoport @RapSheet 10m What does this mean for #Saints? Guarantees Harper will be on the roster this year. Gives them cap help. Doesn't mean much for '14 or '15 |
Re: Roman Harper has a Renegotiated Contract?
Here... short and uncomplicated. He's on a one year 4 million dollar contract. He took a 1.25 million dollar pay cut.

Re: Roman Harper has a Renegotiated Contract?
Saints SS Roman Harper has agreed to an "extension" that pays him $4 million guaranteed this season.
We've air quoted "extension" because it's actually a pay-cut. Harper had been set to make $5.25 million this season, with $2.6 million of it guaranteed. The extra year, 2015, allows the Saints to stretch out bonus money and cap hits. Harper has no guaranteed money beyond 2013. Considering Harper's nightmarish 2012 play, it's not a bad deal for the 30-year-old safety. May 24 - 10:47 AM 5/24/2013: Signed a three-year contract. The deal contains $4 million guaranteed -- a $3.16 million signing bonus and Harper's first-year base salary. 2013: $840,000, 2014: $2.35 million, 2015: $2.7 million, 2016: Free Agent Roman Harper - New Orleans Saints - 2013 Player Profile - Rotoworld.com |

Saints SS Roman Harper's new contract is worth $10.5 million over three years. They basically tore up Harper's old deal -- which put him among the NFL's ten highest paid safeties -- and are now guaranteeing only $4 million of a contract worth $3.5 million annually. Harper took a large pay cut, and none of his payments are guaranteed beyond 2013. Harper will compete for snaps with Malcolm Jenkins and Kenny Vaccaro. All three could play in three-safety sets. Per Triplett we save 3.6mil on the cap. |
Re: Roman Harper has a Renegotiated Contract
Good show, Harper. Glad to keep him in NOLA. It's good of him considering how many fans are dumping on him. He could be a quiet role player on another team without all the malarkey of fans questioning his game or he could take a pay cut to stay with the Saints.
I'm a bigger fan of #41 because of his willingness to not only take a pay cut but to also stay with a team that has much of the fanbase calling out his abilities. |
Re: Roman Harper has a Renegotiated Contract
New Orleans Saints Smart to Renegotiate Roman Harper’s Contract
1 day ago by Michael Terrill The New Orleans Saints were smart to renegotiate safety Roman Harper’s contract. The move not only put the Saints well under the salary cap for the 2013 NFL season, but the new agreement also benefited Harper immensely. New Orleans was only $1.6 million under the salary cap before Harper graciously renegotiated. The Saints are now $5.1 million below the cap, which means they have the 17th most financial space among all of the teams in the league. That is a huge step from having one of the highest salary caps in the NFL only a few days ago. Harper received one more year on his multi-year deal, but his base salaries have changed over the next three seasons. He will now make $840,000 in 2013, $2.35 million in 2014 and $2.7 million in 2015. Instead of counting for $7.1 million against the salary cap, he will now only have $3.6 million next to his name. He was already guaranteed $2.6 million of his salary for this season prior to the redoing of the contract. How this works out in Harper’s favor as well is that he will get a lot of the cash up front, despite taking a $1.5 million pay cut in 2013. That means the 30-year-old will not have to worry about getting released in the next few years without getting his due because he will have already received a large chunk of the money. It was important for New Orleans to keep Harper happy while trying to save money after the seven-year veteran posted one of the best seasons of his career. Harper recorded a career-high 115 combined tackles, two interceptions, 11 passes defended and four stuffs in 16 games last year. Roman Harper: New Orleans Saints S Did Right Thing Redoing Contract |

Re: Roman Harper has a Renegotiated Contract
I'm reading two different thoughts on his contract...
One that nothing is guaranteed after this season, in which case, he costs the team nothing and salary cap hit is negated if released after this season... The second is that we are delaying a potentially bigger salary cap hit in two seasons... |

Guaranteed Money: Mooney guaranteed by a contract. Dead Money: Cap hit due to proration of upfront bonus. If I give a player 25M in upfront bonus for a 5 year contract you can expect 10m a year in dead money for years 4 and 5M for year 5 if I cut you in year 3 (in year 3 I would take a 15M cap hit). (keep in mind this has nothing to do with paying the player in those years, only how the teams cap is effected) If i give a player 25M for 5 years guaranteed that means if I cut you in year 3, I am still paying the player until he gets his 25M. This is why I like Spotrac Roman Harper Contracts, Salaries, Cap Hits, & Transactions Its a 10M 3/year contract worth 10.5m 4m of this IS guaranteed His signing bonus was 2.9 m Look at his variable cap hit, and variable dead money. NFL contracts can be very complex in the pay structure, most people assume they are not. Roman Harper, New Orleans Saints ink extension - NFL.com So to answer your question, both statements are true. His 4M is guaranteed. And we delayed cap hit. While salary cap hit would be nil after this season, the dead money hit is still in effect. Example David Thomas, he has no salary this year to take a hit on but we are taking a hit on .5m dead money. New Orleans Saints - 2013 Salary Cap Breakdown |
Re: Roman Harper has a Renegotiated Contract
Im glad they worked it out. I like Harper as long as he isnt put on an island too often.
