METAIRIE — First things first: He’s rookie Kenny Vaccaro, not Colin Kaepernick.

Similar haircut, skin tone, age, but their similarities end there. Folks around town, Vaccaro said, have confused him with Kaepernick, the quarterback who led the San Francisco 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans.

OK, back to Thursday’s news. Vaccaro is looking forward to getting after quarterbacks in the fall, a skill he rarely utilized last season at the University of Texas.

Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan calls it, “Let it Eat,” Vaccaro said. And the rookie who will play either free safety, strong safety or nickelback has a big appetite. One which matches Ryan’s hunger of returning Saints safeties to their sacking selves of the past.

“Oh yeah;I’m ready to blitz,” Vaccaro said. “I’m ready for everything.”

Already, the new-look defense has earned style points against the Saints offense.

“It’s a challenge for us, offensively, because we’re seeing some things that we haven’t seen in a while, or ever,” quarterback Drew Brees said. “You’ve always got to find ways to combat that.”

But to see middle linebacker Curtis Lofton rushing up the middle?

Certainly not predictable.

In 2011, strong safety Roman Harper spent as much time in backfields as secondaries, finishing with 71/2 sacks, tops for defensive backs in the NFL.

Last season’s defense, under former coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, placed Harper and free safety Malcolm Jenkins in different roles — roles they and their defensive teammates never quite figured out en route to a disastrous campaign.

Ryan, though, plans to bring back the pressure defense. This starts with veterans like Will Smith, Jonathan Vilma and Harper — all of whom made financial concessions to stay on the roster this offseason.

“I’ve been so impressed with their work ethic, their attention to detail and (them) being students of the game,” Ryan said. “So it’s going really well.

“It really doesn’t matter what happened last year. I went back and watched all the tape. ... It’s a work in progress. We’re all in this together. We’re working hard; we’re trying to get better every day.”

That effort continues with Vaccaro, whom the Saints selected 15th overall in April’s NFL Draft.

As a junior, Vaccaro collected the only two sacks of his college career. He spent most of last season defending slot receivers.

“I think I’m a relentless player,” he said. “That’s what you need when you’re blitzing to make plays and change momentum of the game.”

He’ll continue to pick up tips from Harper and Jenkins, both of whom have been a mainstay in the Saints secondary since 2010.

“An important element when you bring in a rookie is who’s in front of them,” Saints coach Sean Payton said. “When you have guys like a Roman Harper, a Malcolm Jenkins — guys that have experience, but are also solid guys — I think that helps the transition.”

I think his versatility will be the anchor of our D's scheme, it sounds like you can put him anywhere and he'll win

I cant wait to see #32 smacking ball carriers and returning picks!

I can see it now. Kaepernik sacks Kaepernik 3 times when the Saints face the 49ers and Vaccaro gets 1 INT off of Vaccaro.

Most fans were screaming "pass rusher"; seeing as how Ryan plays man for the most part grabbing the #1 safety makes perfect sense now.

Not too mention, the LB position has became suddenly crowded with the talent...

I appreciate the Black and Gold goggles bro, but the Saints LB core is far from crowded with talent. I'm not sold on Vaccaro. He's a good tackler with average speed. Sounds like Harper to me.

I can actually understand the skepticism with our linebackers(doesn't mean I agree), but Vaccaro and Harper do not sound alike. Vaccaro is combo safety athletic enough to cover slot receivers and more in the mold Malcolm Jenkins as opposed to Harper. Scouts have compared him to Eric Weddle... and Roman Harper is nothing similar to that. You're in a whole different ball park.

Agreed, he'll never be a Polomalu (a pure stud SS) or an Ed Reed (a pure stud FS), but he can be a very solid combination of the two, which is fine by me.

In the new age of pass happy offenses, he's the new breed... FSS (Free-Strong Safety).

Of course its only paper speculation for now.

I knew someone was gonna give me a list of names. I know all the names and I'm optimistic too, but is there one pro-bowler in that bunch? The dome patrol had 4. That was crowded.

It can be, but 1/3 of the vote are players, 1/3 of the vote are coaches, so its not exactly the popularity contest it would be if it were 100% fan vote.

Its biased and every year there are head scratchers, but they're mostly reputation votes.

Thats why I don't think Harper's two-time selection as an alternate should be dismissed. He damn sure wasn't voted in by fan bias so the players/coaches had more to do with his selection than fans.

The pro-bowl isn't a joke, but it damn sure doesn't consistently pick the very best player at each position year in and year out.

I'm convinced that if you do make it, its quite probable that you don't suck.

I hope the linebackers show improvement but Harper ran a better combine 40 than Vaccaro. He had more college tackles, sacks, forced and recovered fumbles, and both had 5 career picks. Most in this forum hate Harper and love Vaccaro. He's gotta prove it to me. Then again, I only post when I'm drinking.

Combine numbers for the 40yd mean zip

The beer man had no college stats, went to the pro bowl and was all pro in 2002.

Hasllett said that at his first tryout he clocked Beerman at 4.4 flat three times in wet grass. If 40 times are meaningless, why do em?

The last time any of our LB's were in the pro bowl was 2009 when vilma was an alternate, except we won the biggest prize that year

I had a reply but the Pro-Bowl is only a revenue stream that gives notoriety to players that were not good enough to make All Pro.

It's a meaningless, underwhelming, game played by second and third bests that doesn't allow some of the best to play because of the Super Bowl.

If I may add, the voting is a joke. Neither the coaches, fans, or players see any more than 20% of all the games or 40% of all the players in the league play.

I can totally understand your point of view and incredulous outlook for Vacarro but TRUST and BELIEVE.

Lebowski (Ryan) will have these boys ready to play on D. Lots of new YOUNG faces, seasoned vets, and a Head Coach who will push players like never before.

Sorry for my pissy attitude. Of course I believe were going to the bowl. I'm bitter cuz we didn't get any of LSUs players. I thought Vaccaro shoulda been Reid. I'm gettin over it, on my way to get my Vaccaro jersey now.

Harper still has a couple of good years left in him and Jenkins(you never know) in the last year of his contract. I'm hoping we phase out Jenkins......Vaccaro is an upgrade automatically.
