After Tuesday's knee injury to Victor Butler, Wilson's chief competition for the starting strongside outside linebacker position, Wilson might finally get the opportunity to live up to his own lofty expectations.
Unless the Saints change course and elect to use some of their $5.1 million in salary cap space to sign a player in a less-than-stellar remaining free-agent class, Wilson, a backup the past two seasons, appears to be the winner of outside linebacker position by default. Although Butler had recently been taking the most snaps with the first-team defense, the competition between Wilson and Butler figured to play out through training camp, with the loser of the battle likely still getting plenty of playing time in the exotic packages of new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. Butler, who played under Ryan the two previous seasons in Dallas, was one of the Saints' key offseason acquisitions and was expected to ease the defense's learning curve as it transitioned from a 4-3 scheme to a 3-4 alignment. $5.1M?! Ha! Someone better so some homework, Nakia. Pat Yasinskas reported less than $400k, and I find him highly reliable. You can't just look at the figure at the bottom of the team page on spotrac and assume it's right. There are a lot of salaries not plugged in there. We would almost certainly have to restructure someone or let someone go to sign anyone else of importance. Not that anyone like that is even available.

You're the only one that finds that hack reliable! $5.1 million is about right. Anyways, I've been waiting for Martez to get his shot ever since we drafted him... I think he has WAY more potential than Victor Butler.

I'm pushing all of my chips to the table on Martez. I think he will play lights out and 'beast mode' for 2013.

Hack? Ok, bud, whatever you say. All I'm saying is the guy has the largest amount of information resources at his finger tips of anyone else reporting in the NFC South.

Nonsense. Pat is a hack. He is the epitome of ESPNs "Spin" reporting and essentially just barfs back up whatever he lifted from some other source.

Re: New Orleans Saints' Martez Wilson primed to step in for injured Victor Butler
Name me a reporting agency that does not "spin" topics, give opinionated essays, or find themselves wrong on occasion. I'd love to know one, because I've been reading and watching the news for a long ass time and have yet to find one. I don't generally read "reporters" essays for "facts". I read them because they are enjoyable entertainment (<key word). The only reference I made to Yasinskas was pertaining to his reporting of the Saints being $400k under the cap. I trust that it's quite possible that, given his connections to the game via ESPN, he knows something that Spotrac clearly does not know, seeing as how they have an incomplete list of salaries on their website. If you can point me to better information, I'd be much obliged.

I cant stand pat. He always says one positive and five negatives when it comes to the saints but always puts a silver lining on the panthers and the bucs. He needs to go big time.
