Terron Armstead will likely be the Saints left tackle this season

With Jermon Bushrod now in Chicago, the Saints need a new starting left tackle for this season. It sounds like the front-runner to take over is rookie Terron Armstead.

A MAGNET WITH NO NAME! That’s how Coach Sean Payton described the team’s depth chart at left tackle during the offseason. With the departure of free agent left tackle Jermon Bushrod to the Chicago Bears, the Saints must find a replacement from among three candidates: the oft-injured Charles Brown, third-round draft pick Terron Armstead and veteran Jason Smith, a perceived bust after being selected by the St. Louis Rams with the second overall pick in the 2009 draft. My bet is on Armstead before all is said and done.

I can’t imagine Smith getting the job and Armstead was pretty impressive for the Saints during their spring workouts.

A little premature, but probably, yes.

Quite premature.

I'm hopeful though.

Game 1, no way.

Game 9, maybe.

Its most likelythat he'll play back-up for a season. He's awfully raw. This isn't like Evans playing guard from day one, or Nicks starting by week 8.

We'll bring him along slowly like we did with Stinchcomb, Strief, Bushrod and Brown.

C'mon Danno! The kid is gonna impress from day one. Coach is gonna give him his due. He's gonna start game 1 as a reward for his hard work and dedication (and because Drew put in a few good words for him).

Well it certainly wouldn't shock me. Especially since Drew put in some good words for him, just like he did with Tyler Lorenzen 2 seasons ago. Oh wait...

I think it's still Brown's job to lose, but with the injury history he has - Armstead will probably end up starting at LT at some point in the season even if he starts off the season behind Brown.

Re: Terron Armstead will likely be the Saints left tackle this season

I want the coaches to Break down Smiths play and see if he's coachable. He could surprise some folks. There is a lot to be said for a change of scenery. Personally, I would like to have an experienced healthy player that doesn't keep Payton up at night playing at LT. That could be Brown(cross fingers) or Smith.
I agree that Armstead is raw and could use a little seasoning before throwing him into the fire. But then again this coaching staff is not afraid of trial by fire.

I'm really big on Smith too. I thought I was the only one. If they want to start Armstead I say try him at RT. We all know how I feel about Strief....

Im comforatable with Brown starting. We know Brown CAN start. I think he will last 5 or 6 games and then hopefully Armstead will have learned enough to be an actual improvement.

A chip block here and there from our TE's and RB's will make whoever plays on the edge look better. Just expect slower route development....and more pics...

Truth is, its just pure speculation at the moment, we will have a better idea on how he will look when preseason comes around, if he will start or not will depend on what he can do when it matters - gameday!

Um...that wasn't even an article. I could write something like that!

Martez Wilson will start at OLB because he's really good.

This would be conventional wisdom, but unfortunately there is nothing conventional about the Saints' left tackle situation this year. If Armstead outperforms the others (which shouldn't be hard) then I expect he'll get the job. I just don't see anybody on the roster who the team would really want him to sit behind and learn from.

It could be sloppy at first, but I think he'll develop pretty quickly.

I'd feel better if Kromer were still around.

Re: Terron Armstead will likely be the Saints left tackle this season

Here's why Payton doesn't like Charles Brown - he's in the training room waaaaaay too much; and that affects the chemistry, and yes, rhythm of an offensive line...

And as good as Brees has been, it all starts up front with the great offensive line play we've enjoyed since Payton took over...

Armstead will be the starting left tackle unless he can't read the playbook...

Look forward to seeing Armstead run downfield plowing the lanes for PT on Screens and on Ingram for Stretch Plays; maybe see a decapitation when Sproiles is 12 yards downfield and reverses field for additional gain...

Perhaps. He's certainly the most athletic lineman we've drafted in a very long time. He's more raw than the average rookie LT. Thats probably why he was still there in the 3rd.

So unless he develops his game at blazing speed he'll need some time. Of course, judging from what we saw at the combine blazing speed is no problem for Terron.

Don't worry about him... he's a Falcons' troll.

In a perfect world Brown would step up and justify the 2nd rd pick we used. Terron would beat out Streif and spend this season learning the ropes at RT.

Re: Terron Armstead will likely be the Saints left tackle this season

I hope he does win the staring job, let's see what he can do. It would be hard for him to do worse than Bushrod, who needed chips on a regular basis. Put the rookie in there, Saints don't value tackles like the rest of league and if Brown was to beat him out, lets see how he looks at RT

I'm pretty sure Brown is a great player when healthy. If the injury bug doesn't bite him he'll be fine. From what I heard Smith was hurt a lot too.

And this coming from a Falcon, doesn't that team have 3 new starters on the O-Line this year?

check and mate... You're not fun, kind of hard to argue with a Falcon troll when he won't even defend his own team.

You can't claim a "check and mate" on my comment.

Especially when we're discussing OLine strength, not QB prowess.

I can claim whatever I want...

Let's discuss O-Line strength

Falcons = 2-3 new starters on the line this year

Saints = 1 new starter replacing Bushrod; who wasn't great to begin with. Not to mention we have a QB with better pocket awareness that makes the O-Line look better

whatever you say troll...

How do you have any idea that we will be weak at LT? Have you ever seen Armstead or Brown play the position?

You know what they say about assumptions

Wonderful logic you've got going there.

No; you're a troll because you're here to start trouble...

I never said I believed he'll be great, but I'm not believing he'll be weaker either...

Why should we even play the season? It's apparent you have everything all figured out

Let's be honest with ourselves.

Bushrod was a cap loss.

Sacrifices had to be made.

I'm not blaming Loomis.

But let's not pretend that the replacement will be as good simply cause the old guy isn't here anymore.

No one is pretending anything. Bushrod was an average LT. Its not a stretch to think a gifted athlete may actually start at LT sometime during the season and perhaps become at least average.

No doubt, he'll need some time to get used to NFL speed and strength. I just get the feeling he'll be learning on the fly instead of the bench. I don't have any information to back that up, it's strictly my gut feeling.

His athleticism, which you brought up, is what I think gives him a chance to survive the early learning curve until his overall game catches up. Brown and Smith have been around long enough to know better, and just haven't shown near enough, so I'm not catching a good vibe with those two. Ideally, I'd rather he had the chance to sit and learn, but I have confidence that he'll do ok this year, and be a beast down the road.

Don't be surprised if Smith steps and shows why he was a 1 st round draft pick. I've read that for all the talk about him being a bust he really wasn't a bad tackle. He just couldn't stay healthy.
