She was probably a terrible waitress with a bad attitude.

I am a pretty generous tipper (I'll give 5 bucks on a 10 dollar check) but I have no problem stiffing them if the server is rude and acts lazy. Incompentence is one thing, but if you're a jerk to me you'll probably find a couple of nickels on the table.

I'm sure there's more to the story than that. Any waitress would recognise Drew and give him good service whether she was generally a good waiter or not. It was probably the opposite. He probably left a huge cash tip so that she wouldn't "necessarily" have to split it with everyone in the building (like in most restaurants) or something like that. I do that when I have oysters at an oyster bar. When all I have is a dozen on the half shell, I leave a small tip on the tab and tip the oyster guy in cash. He's the one that did all the work.

I'll even over tip at a buffet, but don't come to my table acting like that's a done deal.

Now Drew'll probably have to send her a check and pose with her in a photo just to avoid the whole bad PR thing. Come on football season.

Tips at buffets depend... If I have to ask more than once to not fill my Tea because it is 10% down and it messes up my sweetness then the tip will be effected LOL.

I looked up Del Mar. It's a Chinese restaurant. The receipt is for 5:49pm.

I'll bet anyone $3 that Drew was taking home carryout.

Now I'm a bit of an over-tipper so I tip 10% on to-go but people generally tip MUCH lower on carryout, often times ZERO.

Non issue here. If you can't stomach the off-chance a superstar athlete may not tip you what you deserve, then find a new career.

I'm a good tipper when the service is good, and it goes the other way too.

I know for an absolute fact that Brees is more than generous when it comes to tipping. He is also more than cordial to all the staff and has been more than happy to even come into the kitchen to say hello.

Maybe Drew needs to do what Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin does in restaurants -- which is that, he gets somebody else with him to pick up the check, on their card, and then he settles up privately with that person later. That way the story becomes an "I waited on Jimmy Page and he was very nice, but his friend tipped me lousy" story, and not a "Jimmy Page is a lousy tipper" story.

But I agree with the other posters, it sounds to me like it was take out.

If you take the time to read through all the links and evidence you will discover that...

(1) the meal was for takeout...

(2) it is the policy of the establishment to not accept tips for takeout...

(3) they offer a gluten-free and vegan menu

(4) the restaurant is in California hiring from a pool of people that reelects the likes of Nancy Pelosi, Dianne Feinstein, Bob Filner et al to office and that want a "public union" for fastfood workers with a min wage of $15/hr...
