Is Courtney Roby Ever Going to Play Receiver?
Courtney Roby is no doubt one of the best special teamers the Saints have on the roster. He has returned the ball as well as played other positions in the return game. But, he has yet to make his mark in the passing game. Which begs the question: Is Courtney Roby ever going to play receiver?
This is the second year in a row that we have heard Roby’s chances of playing receiver in the Saints offense. As you can see, he is starting early this year. Terrance Harris from nola.com had this to say today: Courtney Roby may not be the forgotten man at receiver after all[sic]. He has made a couple nice catches in camp included a nice in the corner this morning from Brees over Malcolm Jenkins. Last year during camp it seemed like he had a legitimate chance of nabbing a spot and push for playing time. This year, he is starting camp out great and has made some nice catches. The only problem is that Andy Tanner, Saalim Hakim, Kenny Stills, and Nick Toon have all been doing really well. Andy Tanner has especially had some nice opportunities so far this camp. Every player should show that he can do more than just play special teams. But, as we have learned in the past few years, Roby is a special teams ace. Maybe that is where he belongs permanently. There is a lot of time between now and the start of the regular season and anything can happen so lets wait and see if he can steal a spot on the offense. Re: Is Courtney Roby Ever Going to Play Receiver?
He is another guy that plays WR in camp and preseason, shows up and really makes some very nice plays but never gets given the opportunity in regular season.
Which is kinda harsh because the guy is tough as nails and catches the ball well |

Unless there's a large amount of injuries, I doubt he'll ever see a handful of meaningful reps at receiver.

Roby has a knack for special teams, face it; some players are meant to just play special teams, ex: Steve Gleason.
He is the top gunner and gets to the kick returner really quickly, not too mention he's a decent return guy |

Re: Is Courtney Roby Ever Going to Play Receiver?
Roby is a special teams asset. It's quite possible that he does not see the field as a WR because losing him on Special Teams isn't worth the risk as deep as we are at WR... If we have WRs go down then Roby lining up at WR makes sense.

Re: Is Courtney Roby Ever Going to Play Receiver?
I always think Special Teams is one of those that is quickly overlooked, or, alternatively gets that little patronising pat on the head to say 'Well Done'.
It's not exaggeration to say that they can win or at least turn games. Roby has been a beast on Special Teams and was rightfully selected as the captain. We simply don't need him at WR but as an option if we have issues, that's fine. The other Special Teams guy that always makes me really happy is Thomas Morstead. One of the best punters in the league for me. Huge leg on Kick-Offs, great distance on punts as well as good accuracy and if you want to see where the man truly shines, go back to the Giants game last season where twice (in a game where we stunk on ST) he smashed the return man as the last line of defence. Awesome. |

Re: Is Courtney Roby Ever Going to Play Receiver?
We've brought in some young'uns that can play ST this year. Love the guy, but I think it's going to be Roby's toughest season to make the final 53. I wouldn't put any money whatsoever on his being on the sidelines come September.
