Observations from Tuesday's practice at New Orleans Saints training camp
WHO'S HOT: Nick Toon
Second-year receiver Nick Toon continues standout among the wide receivers. During Tuesday's practice he consistently made the routine and spectacular catches. The crowd out at the Saints practice facility began screaming "Tooooon!" after he blew by cornerback A.J. Davis and then caught a deep pass from Luke McCown in stride down the sideline. Toon is competing for one of the receiver spots behind Marques Colston and Lance Moore. Toon missed of his rookie campaign because of a foot injury and subsequent surgery. MOVING UP THE DEPTH CHART: Terron Armstead After practicing primarily with the third team most of preseason camp, the Saints elevated the rookie left tackle to the second team unit on Tuesday. Jason Smith had been working with the second team unit during team drills throughout camp, so this was the first time the coaching staff had changed up the rotation. Part of it could be the improvement Armstead has been making. He was perhaps the best of the offensive tackles during one-on-one drills Tuesday. ROOKIE WATCH: Ryan Griffin Griffin, the free-agent quarterback and Tulane product, has been impressive with his command of the offense and his quick release. But the rookie sometimes shows there is a big learning curve he must overcome as he attempts to transition from college quarterback to NFL quarterback. He hit a couple of really nice passes during Tuesday's practice, but then during 7-on-7 passing drills he through behind Toon and the ball was tipped before landing in the hands of cornerback Corey White. QUOTABLE "I think every team is going to needs a guy who is going to be like that, a little craziness and edge to him. You've got to be smart, but it's still early in training camp so want to establish my physical presence early on." -- rookie safety Kenny Vaccaro on his physical play that is sometimes drawing the ire of his offensive counterparts like tight end Jimmy Graham. |
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.
All little common sense goes a long way. |
