"Right now, we just have a lot of work to do," said head coach Sean Payton afterward. "I think the tape will be important tomorrow."
The big positive was that the Saints, beat up already in the first two weeks of training camp, didn’t see any major contributors leave the game with injuries. Drew Brees finished 7 of 10 for 65 yards and guided the Saints to a field goal. His primary backup in this first preseason game, Luke McCown, went 18 of 28 for 216 yards and two touchdowns. The Saints, though, didn’t allow several players who have been injured during the preseason to see the field. Pierre Thomas and Marques Colston didn’t see time and neither did Junior Galette, Jonathan Vilma and Patrick Robinson. The Saints held the the Chiefs to 215 yards while gaining 427 of their own. Preston Parker caught four passes for 43 yards and two scores and Nick Toon solidified his standing with a four-catch, 66-yard night. But if fans were looking to glean anything from this preseason opener, they didn’t get much. The Saints used several different defensive packages, rolling in several different players you’ve likely never heard of and still things felt familiar. Kansas City moved 80 yards in 14 plays and used more than a third of the first-quarter clock to take a 7-0 lead on a Jammal Charles 1-yard plunge. Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith went 7-for-8 on the drive, cobbling together 68 yards on mostly underneath routes that did the job. It was his only series of the game. I'm not surprised. This has been called a "normal offseason" but in reality it's anything but.
It's early. Sean's wheels are turning. My money's on the visor! |

Correction Sean, the front office didn't get you all the help at LB that everyone in and out of Saints Nation said you needed...but it's still early/not too late...

And Butler likely would have been our best LB pick-up since Vilma. And yes, I think it would have been better than the Lofton signing. We have a ton of promising young potential to throw at the LB spots. Granted they are all raw, but their ceiling is sky high. |
