New Orleans Saints make slew of cuts including wide receivers Steve Breaston, Patrick Crayton
 

The New Orleans Saints didn't need to cut down to 75 players for another week, but the team made a pile of moves Monday, according to the league's transaction wire.

The Saints released quarterback Seneca Wallace, along with veteran wide receivers Steve Breaston and Patrick Crayton. The team also waived cornerback A.J. Davis (injured), wide receiver Jarred Fayson, guard Ricky Henry, linebacker Chase Thomas and cornerback Dion Turner.

The team also placed defensive lineman Kenyon Coleman on injured reserve officially ending his season as Coleman wasn't given the "designated to return" status. Coleman sustained a torn pectorial muscle nearly two weeks ago.

The Saints didn't sign any new players, according to the league transaction wire, so the Saints roster stands at 81. Wide receiver Joe Morgan and linebacker Victor Butler are still on the roster even though both could miss the season with knee injuries. Butler is on the physically-unable-to-perform list, while Morgan remains on the active roster.

Thinning out the herd!

I like it. Stills and Toon are the 3/4 guys easy at WR. Get them as many reps as you can. That leaves Parker as the #5 and probably Roby at #6, although I really like Hakim's speed.

Thomas was released early. if he's not grabbed by another team, he may be picked back up for the Practice Squad later. We shall see

I think it definitely comes down to Tanner/Roby for that last spot. Tanner is still eligible for the practice squad so Roby may have the edge.

But Parker is also a good special teams player so Tanner may make the cut and Parker replaces Roby.

I've heard virtually nothing from Roby this year, and I'd imagine there will be a slew of special teams aces sitting on the couch waiting for a call if we need one.

Keep Tanner please.

Don't get me wrong as I liked the pickup after the draft... but now can stop with the nonsense that Thomas was going to be our next great OLB or whatnot.

I was really hoping for a lot more from Chase Thomas. Everyone said that we had the best group of undrafted free-agent signings mainly due to Chase, Kevin Reddick and Rod Sweeting. Disappointed to hear he's been released but here's hoping he clears waivers and we can put him on the practice squad.

Chase Thomas was the only surprising name on that list, but on the other hand, he hasn't really flashed during the OTAs and hasn't been noticeable in the first two preseason games - maybe PS if he's available for that.

Chase Thomas got virtually no work this last game against the Raiders so that should not have been a surprise to anyone. A little surprised by the cutting of Breaston so soon - I always liked him - but this just means that Stills and Toon are settling into their roles better and that the coaching staff is much more comfortable with them. For the #5 receiver I like Preston Parker due to his abilities as a returner. We shall see. Or maybe we keep Tanner and Parker and cut Roby?

True, but the Saints have a recent history of releasing players as early as possible, so that they can perhaps find a new employer while the preseason is still in full swing.

So, while it would be a long-shot that Thomas would be brought back for the PS - it isn't impossible, and certainly not because he was released this early.

A little upset. Saints have a long history of letting go of players, only to have them turn to gold elsewhere. Thumbs down for the Thomas move.

If they were trying to sign him (Chase Thomas) to the PS, he would not have been cut this soon.

It's bye bye Chase. Maybe he will get a tryout somewhere else (Atlanta Falcons maybe, since he is from Georgia).
