We had the worst defense in NFL history - what does that say?

Though, I'm a little more optimistic about the defense with the switch to the 34 and the additions these past two years of Hicks, Jenkins, Lewis, and yes, Vacarro - we still lack talent in the OLB corps which is where the primary counterattack/pressure comes from...
For every Ninko there are three Meachems.

We've had the top-ranked offense in the NFL for 5 years now.

I agree that OLB could be our weakness on D but I'm reserving my thoughts until the actual starters are on the field

Re: Status of recent Saints cuts...

Employees are cut for various reasons.

1. Redundant
2. No value above peers
3. Problematic beyond value.
4. Someone just didn't care for that employee.
5.This is an extreme rarity, hardly does a manager ever consider this. Letting an employee go to avoid him getting damaged..... Bad fit.
6. Integration liability.

Since nearly all of our LBs are not without an asterisk by their name I must assume there are no shoe ins and he was low man on the totem pole.

That being said, when cuts come it is not just a myopic we keep the best 8 LBs.... What comes down is what's more important to us a 9th LB or 6th WR? Chase may have not been as valuable as Robinson to the team.

If he was let go I can only assume that it was for a good enough reason and Payton approves... I don't see Payton giving anyone full hire/fire authority after the debacle with Spags last year.

[QUOTE=jeanpierre;518815]We let Ninkovich geaux and kept Will Smith - what does that say?

Sorry jeanpierre but Ninkovich is not an upgrade over Smith.
Go look at their numbers. Ninkovich has had two decent years in NE because he has one of the best DT in the league in Wilfork who commands double teams. But is numbers aren't overshadowing Smith's.

That at that moment in our system Smith was the better player. Nink didn't develop in our 4-3 but came alive in the Patriots 3-4ish defence.

Payton can do what he wants. At least he's true to his personality, which is impatient much of the time (i.e. running game).

You can look at it as hard-nosed or strict, or whatever, but sometimes it takes a little time for a player to grasp something. And I'm not talking about the likes of Bush, Ingram, Meachem, or even Roman Harper...you can't develop if you have mashed potatoes between your ears.

I'd honestly vote Tanner over Parker/Roby and Chase Thomas over Will Smith at OLB. Tanner does the work, Parker gets the glory, and Smith is just a little slow for what he needs to do.

But deep in my heart, all I really care about is embarrassing the Falcons and seeing their coach blow a gasket on the sidelines

Ninkovich's legs or knees kept getting hurt so we let go to Miami right? Smith was playing at a high level back then and wan't getting injured.

Blew his knee out twice with us.
We'd have been fools to carry him for 2 or 3 years on our roster.

You say that, but Dennis Allen is a damn, good coach; and like Payton, he can beat teams with their castoffs with better scheme and using lesser talent/smarter players...
