Unlike the NCAA, rankings mean absolutely ZILCH in the NFL. Why does everyone get so wrapped up with them? If you pull up enough of those you'll probably find the cleveland browns with a #1 ranking somewhere.

Cause they're fun. It's all part of being a fan. Most people like to see their team respected. When you get right down too it, football isn't important in the grand scheme of life either but its fun.

I think I'd rather be respected after the season, as I danced around with the Lombardi trophy.

Sorry, but though I agree with you on the value of the rankings...
...in some parallel universes, black is white, male is female, if you're fat you will be thin and up is down BUT my friend, The Browns will always be the Browns, no matter what one you travel to.

That's what they said about the Saints until 2009.

The point is that NFL rankings are meaningless and getting all upset about them is a waste of time. Like the original poster said, we were 18 going into the 2009 season and we won the Super Bowl. I'm guessing the two seasons before that, we were ranked high and didn't even make the playoffs and then the year before that which was 2006, we were probably ranked 32nd and went to the NFC championship game.

I guess I'm still missing the point. Sorry, sometimes I'm a little slow on the uptake.

Are you suggesting the rest of us stop posting about team rankings? Or are you just making a general announcement to the world that you don't like them?

You're 100% correct that these rankings have no effect on whether the Saints will make the Super Bowl. You are also correct that they are in no way a substitute for the NFL championship, which is the ultimate goal of the team. And I'm with you when you say you'd rather get respect by dancing with the Lombardi. But it's not an "either or" situation.

Some of us enjoy reading about how the so called "experts" compare us to other teams and their reasoning behind it. Sometimes we agree with the rankings, sometimes we don't. They're only meant to inspire thought and discussion. It's really not much different than what we do on this site. We discuss team strengths and weaknesses, successes and failures, but in the end, our discussions are merey our opinions so therefore, they're kinda meaningless as well. In the end, it's all about having fun.

No. Post away. Are you saying that I shouldn't suggest that people not obsess over them? ... and no. I don't care about them one way or the other because they're totally meaningless and knowing our CBS, ESPN, whatever ranking, is only marginally more important than knowing the number of power poles between my home and the Super Dome.
