NFL Power Rankings: Dolphins, Chiefs make big jumps into top 10 - CBSSports.com
It's still early in the season and there will be significant jumps and declines in the Power Rankings going forward. Reality is starting to set in for teams with preseason projections that were too high or low. Prisco's Power RankingsDolphins making waves, 49ers take a tumble Also, just because a team like San Francisco lost a game doesn't mean the 49ers drop below all the 2-0 teams. The same could be said down below in the rankings that a 0-2 team could and should be ranked ahead of a few 1-1 teams. 1. Denver Broncos: Ranked No. 1 last week they hold the top spot with a road win over the Giants. The Broncos have scored 90 points in two games and probably left another 10 on the field. They will get better on defenses when Von Miller and Champ Bailey return. Too bad the Broncos don't play the Seahawks this season. 2. Seattle Seahawks: The Seahawks have given up 10 points in two games and they are not at full strength on defense. Wait until they get Brandon Browner, Bruce Irvin and Chris Clemons back. Can anyone go into Seattle and get a win? 3. Houston Texans: The Texans have issues but find ways to win. It's important that Matt Schaub keeps bringing his team from a deficit to win. DeAndre Hopkins is turning out to be the perfect piece to round out this offense. 4. San Francisco 49ers: They ran into a buzzsaw up in Seattle and incurred some injuries besides getting their nose bloodied. I still think they can win their division, but that's twice now that they've gone to Seattle and gotten blown out. They've scored a total of 16 points in eight quarters in their past two games there. 5. Chicago Bears: Marc Trestman is doing wonders with this offense and there is reason to believe Jay Cutler is a different QB. Week 3 brings a big Sunday night game in Pittsburgh. 6. New Orleans Saints: My hat is off to Rob Ryan and the defensive product he's putting on the field. The Saints have given up 31 points in two games. Last year they gave up 75 points in the first two games. Jimmy Graham looks unstoppable at tight end. 7. Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs were ranked 17th last week after a win over Jacksonville, but beating the Cowboys is a different story. KC has given up 18 points in two games and Alex Smith never turns the ball over. The most touchdowns he's ever thrown in a season is 18 and that will go by the wayside when he reaches 25 this season. 8. Green Bay Packers: This week they looked like the Super Bowl contender I thought they were. Early on the Packers couldn't block the Redskins pass rush when Aaron Rodgers was sacked four times but they settled down and Rodgers threw for 480 yards and four touchdowns. 9. Miami Dolphins:All the Dolphins have done is climb up the rankings from the preseason until now. They were No. 21 last week but make the biggest jump in the league all the way to No. 8. Ryan Tannehill looks like a guy you can win with, Mike Wallace came alive and the defense has only surrendered 30 points in two games. 10. New England Patriots: Two wins over rookie quarterbacks this early in the season isn't that impressive. The Pats are buying time until they get a few receivers back. This week Tampa Bay visits Foxborough, which should keep the Pats in the ranks of the undefeated. 11. Atlanta Falcons: Matt Ryan and those receivers are the formula for a top-10 team but that defense may be the death of them yet. They let the Rams score 21 points in the second half to get back in the game this week at home. 12. Cincinnati Bengals: The Bengals have offensive weapons, a quarterback who has already led the team to the playoffs twice and a defense that can get after quarterbacks. It looks like their time has come. 13. Dallas Cowboys: I probably had the Cowboys too high last week, but I couldn't really judge the Giants properly. Now the real Cowboys are on the field. A team that can break your heart as fast as it can make you cheer. How can Tony Romo call 45 pass plays, hit nine different receivers and throw only one touchdown? 14. Indianapolis Colts: The Colts sacked Ryan Tannehill five times, they ran for 133 yards and Andrew Luck threw for 321 yards. All indications are that they are a good team. Not to worry. 15. San Diego Chargers: One of the biggest surprise teams in this early season. To come across the country on a short week to face the 'new' Eagles offense and slow it down was impressive after a hard-fought battle with the Texans. Philip Rivers now has seven touchdown passes in two games. 16. Philadelphia Eagles: The defense is vulnerable and the fast-paced offense may be hurting the other side of the ball right now. How long can Michael Vick keep up the pace? The Eagles punted three times in their first five series. 17. Baltimore Ravens: The Ravens are in the developmental stage with their defense and have given up 55 points to the 41 scored by the offense. The receivers are missing the threats they had last year in Dennis Pitta and Anquan Boldin. This could be an up-and-down year and they may need to be a heavy run team until further notice. 18. Tennessee Titans: The Titans are real good in the trenches right now and they can hang around in any game controlling the line of scrimmage. They need Jake Locker to come alive and get the ball to the receivers more. Throwing for fewer than than 150 yards a game isn't going to produce enough points. 19. St. Louis Rams: The ingredients are there with the pass rush and the cover corners, but Sam Bradford has to put it all together on offense. 20. Arizona Cardinals: This team could easily be 2-0 right now. If the running game improves and Carson Palmer stays upright there is reason for optimism. 21. Detroit Lions: Not having Nick Fairley this week changed the complexion of this defense. Losing Reggie Bush early didn't help. This team needs the depth players to come through when injuries hit. 22. New York Giants: Ten turnovers in two games says it all. 23. Washington Redskins: Robert Griffin III as a pocket passer while they ease him back in is a tough call. The defense has given up 71 points in two games but it's a combination of offense and defensive issues. 24. Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers can still play defense and as soon as they turn the offense over to Big Ben and the passing game, they will win a few games. 25. Minnesota Vikings: Christian Ponder has thrown two touchdown passes and is completing 58.6 percent of his passes while turning the ball over five times. 26. Buffalo Bills: EJ Manuel is getting better in chunks. The Bills fans are starting to believe the future is bright. Mario Williams' 4 1/2 sacks this week is a solid statement. They could be a tough out this season. 27. New York Jets: The Jets defense is solid and the offense is a work in progress. They are a little better than I thought they would be, and if Geno Smith starts to improve, they could be a decent second-half team. 28. Carolina Panthers: What's the story with Cam Newton and Co.? Newton has been sacked seven times in 68 pass plays and some of his nine runs were escapes. Newton is now 4-13 on the road when he doesn't have a rushing touchdown. 29. Oakland Raiders: I was happy for Raider faithful, who got a home win this week -- but it was over the Jaguars. Coach Dennis Allen does have the team playing with pride and they will not embarrass themselves. 30. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Things look off in Tampa Bay from the quarterback position, and that upsets everything else. It's too bad because Doug Martin is running the ball well and the Bucs pass rush got to Drew Brees four times. 31. Cleveland Browns: The Browns play solid defense and can hang for a while with most teams, but they just can't finish. 32. Jacksonville Jaguars: They may have closed out the competition for the No. 1 overall draft pick already. |

Re: Defensive Rankings
Agree 100% that KC is clearly the 7th best team in the NFL. I mean, they beat Jax AND Dallas, and would definitely be favored over GB, NE, Atl, etc...

Re: Defensive Rankings
Green Bay is the only team that should be ahead of the chiefs. They will compete with anyone this year. Alex smith is vastly underrated.

Re: Defensive Rankings
Last year we gave up 75 points in the first two games and 500 yards per game
This year 31 points and 320 yards a game, big improvement The offense has to get going, if and when they do we will be unstoppable |
