Mike and Mike blast the city of New Orleans

I was listening this morning, like I rarely do for obvious reasons and one of the Mikes was talking about how he was here and was terrified of being robbed. He said he was set up with all of his equipment before the dome reopening Atlanta game and a cop came up to him and said "you are going to get robbed" and walked away. He was talking about how the cop didn't offer to help or any suggestions where to go that was safer. He said he was scared ****less. He said last year when he came for the Super Bowl he left a restaurant and walked around the corner and looked around and was obviously in the wrong place and was scared to death. Basically made it sound like our whole city is dangerous. I don't totally disagree, but still. He did go on to say we know how to show people a good time and the SB was great.

Just like anywhere, there are the bad areas and there are the good areas... With that said, I've never felt scared at anytime while being in New Orleans

I agree with Mitch - use your brain when traveling anywhere!
I've been to New Orleans many, many times and have never felt threatened or been afraid and have experienced nothing but kindness and hospitality while visiting.

If you're in downtown Manhattan New York and take the wrong turn, you can get mugged at ANY moment.

Take a train to Brooklyn or the Bronx, get off and take a left or right down a street and you'll get mugged.

I have had several friends live there and one, in particular, said he was mugged 15 times. The expression goes "you're not a New Yorker until you've been mugged at least twice."

It's called living and traveling in the inner cities of the U.S. Be careful where you walk. NYPD is even less helpful, along with Chicago, Detroit etc. What are the cops supposed to do, babysit them and buy them a drink-i-poo?

They are such idiots it's unreal. They spew this drivel just for ratings so someone will be "incensed" and pay attention to them.

SaintsBro 09-30-2013 02:05 PM

Re: Mike and Mike blast the city of New Orleans

There is a certain segment of people, New Orleans "booster" types, who think that everybody "out there" LOVES New Orleans, that the world loves our food and music and culture, that everyone thinks it's the coolest town, that New Orleans is known and loved by everybody all over the world.... And these people think that everybody thinks like they do -- that New Orleans is the best place on earth.

And NEWS FLASH -- a lot of people DON'T FEEL THAT WAY, they actually hate us, they loathe the city and its people, and they wish the whole city would just go away and stop existing. They wish it just wasn't even there for them to have to deal with. A lot of people would be perfectly happy if New Orleans fell into the swamp, or if it had never been rebuilt after Katrina. They DON'T like us and never will.

So this "Mike" is just speaking for a large proportion of the national population, confirming what his audience already thinks about the city, telling them what they want to hear, reflecting the thoughts of a large number of people who don't "get" New Orleans and would rather not have to go there at all, or even think about it.

He is only reflecting what a large number of people think, and the sooner people realize this, the better.

The other thing that this displays is the self-defeating animosity that is endemic to New Orleans -- the NOPD guy who does nothing to help, but enjoys making the visitor uncomfortable and kind of antagonizing him. I see this a lot, it's a certain strain of negative thinking in the city.

My first thought was "P#$$ys"
Then , "there are places in every city you do not go alone or at night."

Then one is from New York City, and the other grew up in Cleveland... Seriously!?

WHAT!?!? ... I used to like them guys, ... hard to believe a coupla' guys from NYC & Cleveland would even think like that ... and last year, at the Superbowl when he walked around the corner & thought he was in the wrong place ... he was probably in the right place ... from my personal, urban experiences, ;).

Stick to commenting on football, fellas ... it's what you're supposedly good at, eh?

I don't know if being on your guard, is the same thing as being scared.... But I lived in New Orleans for 28+ years and had never felt scared but when my wife and I came back the week after the saint won the sb I was on my guard.... If it helps we were in the quarter, and I felt like I was babysitting because my wife and her friends were getting plastered and there I was the only guy.....

I see his point, but it is in most big cities also and that point should have been made.
New Orleans is no worse than most others. You have to be "on gaurd" in most big cities.

In the words of fellow New Orleanian, rapper Juvenile, "You look like one of them boys that ain't never been f***ed over. I'm 'bout to change that, send that boy to the Nolia. Put a pistol in his face. Make him empty out his pockets. If he think we fakin' he gone know after we cock it."

Lol. There's never been a city like New Orleans. Every ward was the hood, and they had plenty of them every where you looked. I'm from the 9. My cousin from the 17. Got friends from the 7. All the rappers are from uptown. 3rd ward. Magnolia. Calliope. The Melph. I can see why it would be scary to an outsider. It should be. It was the murder capital for a long time.

What gets me is that he's a fairly smart guy and at a stage in his life where he should not have to be told he is in a bad area as opposed to a good area.

I'm living in Salt Lake, blocks away from the Mormon epicenter but all you have to do is observe that a couple miles down there are rusted shopping carts, homeless, dirty buildings, trash, weeds, and a big billboard saying get off of drugs fool!

I can understand what they're feeling and what they felt. I am a born and raised New Orleanian. Since my childhood, our house has been robbed 4 times, I've been mugged on the street twice, I've been shot at, my car has been broken into twice, my friend has been held at gun point and put in his trunk... and this is just off the top of my head. I really don't have an issue with anything they've said. While New Orleans is my home, in the back of my mind, I'm always a little weary when I go out.

I'm not going to pretend I've been trying to move out this place for quite a while now. I'd like to take my kids out and about and not have any worries about them being safe. I love being close to the water, I love the city, I love atmosphere and culture... however the ignorant people, not so much.

That's harsh. I think it's all about where you live in the city. There are safer places, there's the Northshore. But that's for real what you wrote, and I feel for you man.

These clowns are talking about tourist places, in the Quarters, in places with nice restaurants. There's petty crime in ANY tourist districts everywhere. Can't stop the purse snatchers, period.

Personally, I hope they snatch the purse and make-up case of BOTH Mikes next time they're here in the city!

Re: Mike and Mike blast the city of New Orleans

I live in a relatively safe area, a suburb of Kansas City on the Kansas side but I am always wary. My grandkids laugh at me when I tell them they can't play outside unless I am there with them...but I refuse to take a chance with their safety. Crazy people and criminals are everywhere!

My home, in the country where we used to live, was broken in to twice - the seconds time they shot my lovebirds before stealing everything of value we had! My husband has his concealed carry permit and he has a gun in his truck at all times, we both legally own guns and we know how to use them and will if necessary.

You can't be too careful no matter where you are! It's not just New Orleans folks.

I am calling Bovine Scatology on Mike's 'story'. I am fairly certain that there was an army of people, ESPN techs, other network people, etc. around.

The SuperDome re-opened in September of '06, it is almost October of '13; I have never heard this 'story' before.

I don't doubt his goofy a$$ probably left the hotel to go to Starbucks and didn't know where the hell he was going and got lost.

You do have to be smart of where your at and where to go, but at the same time , a couple of buddies and I were approached by a dude and he was raising hell b**ching at us about the color clothes we were wearing down that street....we were down Canal St. at about 3:00 in the afternoon. We just ignored him and kept on going and eventually he just walked away. I'm assuming he was either setting us up, f***ed up,or a retard.
Overall, I'm not to concerned when I go there, but I do keep my eyes open.

Re: Mike and Mike blast the city of New Orleans

From someone that has traveled a bit, New Orleans is not a stand out city. I've been held up at knife point by Turks in a German subway, seen a buddy's jaw broken because we were robbed in a restaurant by gunpoint in Lagos Nigeria because he only had a cheap phone..... My sister teaches 7th grade in Vermillion Parish; in two years she has had two black eyes by girls, had a student arrested for choking his little brother to death and presently has 3 in her class in ankle bracelets. The Houston news every morning has at least 3 murders.... 3 were killed at a car wash yesterday.... Last week 2 were killed during car jackings.

I am a white American male.... I know where I shouldn't be at what times, and where I shouldn't be ever. I understand the dangers in major cities and not trying to take anything away from everyone's life experiences.... That said, those a-holes on the radio were out of line.

All I know one time (French Quarterfest '93) we were approached after parking in a lot heading to the quarter by a few individuals...

Now we're not cowboys mind you, nor trying to compensate for any manhood issues...

But we simply drew our .40s and Bubba asked them if they "were gonna crawfish or crawl the **** back into the projects"...

As they ran away, they said something about "don't f*** with those boys from down the bayou..."

Lesson: Criminals know Gun control DOESN'T work and those thugs knew people from my hometown honestly practice the second amendment and the protection it affords...

Tannehill and Philbin were all set up in the Superdome. A security guard walked by and said', "Y-all gonna get a beat down." Then he walked away without helping.

Re: Mike and Mike blast the city of New Orleans

I have been back to NOLA several times a year and I must say, there has yet to be a moment when I was walking at midnight and I thought "I might get mugged." Usually I am not waltzing down Elysian Fields at the time. I just know what places to avoid before I get to a certain city, and then I mark it on my maps and avoid it like the plague.

In response to the comment about most people who haven't been there not liking NOLA, I find the statement to be true. People I work with constantly act like NOLA is filled with thugs on one side and racists on the other and they are caught in a gang war. Once they take my advice on where to go they have nothing but nice things to say about the city.

I dont know about that, Bro. I know some people do say ignorant things about New Orleans, but I dont think its anywhere near a majority.

Intelligent people know that there are all kinds in every city. Every city has a Garden District, and a waste dump. Just getting gas in Houston, you better be ready for whatever, because somebody who doesnt like to work is
looking at you, waiting to see if you're weak or timid.

N.O. certainly has its flaws, I refer to a phenomenon sometimes that I call, "New Orleans Hotel Hell." Also, when the road makes zero sense, I call that "Gettin Louisianana'd." I was also on my guard, after the Storm, and always try to excercise common sense, but I love New Orleans like no other city. I've met many, many wonderful people in N.O, black and white, and I've helped numerous people, some very different from me.

Budsdrinker nailed it. After we won the SB, I wasnt sure what would happen, but I had little worry that there would be riots and cars burning. I pretty much expected exactly what happened, and in fact, was surprised at just how friendly the celebration was. It was like everyone loved everyone. I'm hoping for another one this year. Maybe I'll watch it from a balcony this time, as the crowd was a bit overwhelming, but there is no place I'd rather be.
