Drew Brees won't be letting sons play football anytime soon
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has made a fantastic living playing football. But that doesn't mean he is willing to let his three sons follow in his footsteps.
In fact, Brees and his wife have already decided that they won't allow any of their sons to play football before they are teenagers. If they want to pick up pigskin by the time they are teenagers, they will be able to, but until then Mr. and Mrs. Brees don't believe letting them play is worth the risk of injury. "At a certain age, I think it's appropriate. I think you can be too young to go out there and strap on a helmet," Brees said Wednesday after practice. "As a parent, you have to know what those risks are, and the protocols that have to take place when things happen. When you get a concussion, you should be out for a certain period of time. You should be taking the baseline test. You go back and take that test again, get cleared by medical professionals before you ever play. For a kid, it should be at least a week or two, if not more." Brees is not the only professional football player who has taken a stand against his children playing football. Kurt Warner, Ed Reed, and Bart Scott are just a few of the other players who have also taken the similar stance. Heck, even President Obama once questioned whether he would let a son play football. I wouldn't let them touch the field except as a general manager.

So what? The Mannings didn't let any of their sons play until they were in their teens either.

no disrespect to Drew and his wife...
Explain the little tyke in the helmet clutching the football in the Wrangler Commercial. Maybe Drew needs to understand that boys copy Dad and they will play FB. |
Re: Drew Brees won't be letting sons play football anytime soon
I was playing tackle at the age of 7. Never had or saw a serious injury in peewee football. However, I don't see anything wrong with making his kids wait. They'll be hungry for it.

Who can blame Brees? Brees was mostly a tennis player until high school. I don't think Jimmy Graham played football until he was 20 and we see how that turned out :)

Re: Drew Brees won't be letting sons play football anytime soon
Played flag from the ages of 14-17, then played kitted
Injuries can be strange in football, for example i went 6 years without an injury then in my final year tore the ligaments in my shoulder, broke my finger and injured my knee Its brees' call, but when the boys start realising that daddy plays the sport they love I don't think he will be able to stop them asking him |
Re: Drew Brees won't be letting sons play football anytime soon
I see nothing wrong little Little League Football no more than Little League Swimming , Tennis, Ice-skating, etc.
No one says anything about swimming, soccer, softball, piano....whatever. I think, perhaps, the M/M Brees may want to have their young boys develop their own talents, skills, choices , identity instead of starting out with football and being indentified with that sport by others and by themselves too. I could understand that reason being that their dad is who he is. Their boys might not be any good at any part of football. Perhaps if DB's career was at the top of tennis, swimming, baseball instead of football, perhaps the M/M Brees would feel the same way about those sports. That is what I assume . |

Giving this thought, all the safeguards and training required to make Pop Warner safe for kids, Drew, why not coach and make it so?
Drew is a game changer and leader. PeeWee is a great place to start making a difference. |
