Re: Bum Philips Passes at Age 90

lets set the record straight

Phillips couldn't replicate the same success in New Orleans after being fired by the Oilers after the 1980 season. He never guided the Saints to a winning record going 27-42 in New Orleans, but Phillips did help put together one of the best draft classes in Saints history in 1981 by selecting players like Rickey Jackson, George Rogers, Frank Warren, Hoby Brenner, Jim Wilks and Hokie Gajan.

1986 was the Jim Mora era

Ok he built the house Mora lived and thrived in. that is simple to see. So give credit were credit is due!

He was not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. Archie got hosed and sent to Houston and we got Kenny the Snake Stabler in return. Now any one alive during that time period has to admit Kenny was very creative at losing a game and many fans suspected it was point spread driven. This to me is the biggest blemish in his time here.

Rest in peace Bum and i will always remember you for the laughs and the team you helped build here. Oh yeah it took me a year to figure out Kenny and my wallet says thanks for keeping him as long as you did

RIP, coach Bum. You did pass on Lawrence Taylor, drafting Rogers instead. Can you imagine the Dome Patrol with LT?

Re: Bum Philips Passes at Age 90

He definitely knew how to draft. That was all he did for us though. Seems like he just quit on us and started building a good ole boys club and made some horrible moves like trading Archie Manning for a washed up OT because it was one of his Oiler buddies.

By all accounts he was a great guy but he screwed us in his last years as our coach. By the end he was just collecting a pay check.

Re: Bum Philips Passes at Age 90

Rest in Peace, Bum. I loved this guy and his quotes:

"Respect all, fear none"
"There's two kinds of coaches, them that's fired and them that's gonna be fired."
"The harder we played the behinder we got."
"I never scrimmage Oilers against Oilers...what for? Houston isn't on our schedule."
"Last year we knocked on the door. This year we beat on it. Next year we're going to kick the son of a ***** in."
