Saints to 'evaluate' Khiry Robinson's snaps

Saints to 'evaluate' Khiry Robinson's snapsby Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

The Saints have a pass-heavy offense led by quarterback Drew Brees, which means the run game often takes a back seat. The Saints rank 23rd in rushing offense (86.7 yards per game) and 28th in yards per carry (3.4).

However, the Saints seem to have something brewing in rookie running back Khiry Robinson. Although the Saints backfield is loaded with talent (Pierre Thomas, Darren Sproles, Mark Ingram), Robinson is making the most of his limited work. He is second on the team in rushing yards (137) and is averaging a team-high 5.3 yards per carry.

Coach Sean Payton is certainly paying attention to Robinson's effectiveness in the run game.

"He's been explosive. He's been tough," Payton said, per The Times-Picayune. "He's been hardnosed and we will continue to look at his snaps and evaluate how he fits in each game plan."

I think we may have our next PT.

Re: Saints to 'evaluate' Khiry Robinson's snaps

He's gained yards behind a questionable O line, stayed healthy and protected the football everytime he's had it

Definitely increase his workload, he and PT run similar, with their shoulders down and always manage to maintain their balance after initial contact

Re: Saints to 'evaluate' Khiry Robinson's snaps

Please evaluate the crap out of it, because at the end of the day:

1) 26 carries
2) 5.3 yds per carry
3) 0 fumbles

For me to feel the "next-coming-of-PT-kind-of-good", he needs to have these numbers after 100 touches. But considering the Sam's sample size we've gotten so far, I'm loving this dude. If he learns the pass protection aspect along with these kind of rushing numbers, I might spontaneously combust in my recliner.

Yep Dizz, thats exactly why he reminds me so much more of a young PT than Ivory. Great feet.

The guy shows good vision and good balance. They need to stick with the hot hand. I get more impressed with him with every game, seems to run better when you keep feeding him the ball.

I was impressed with him in the last game. He's hungry and you can tell by the way he runs. The kid wants to break it loose. Geaux Khiry!!

Yeah....anybody still think this kid doesn't have it? He should be getting 10-12 carries a game minimum.

Re: Saints to 'evaluate' Khiry Robinson's snaps

Part of the reason I think Robinson (and Ivory before him, and PT before them) have been so successful is that they were on college teams where the offensive line wasn't necessarily making huge holes for them to run through. So coming to the NFL is not such a transition.

Seems the opposite could also be true when you look at guys like Ingram and Richardson, and early-career Reggie Bush, they run behind lines that dominate, so when they come to the NFL all of a sudden they don't see any holes to run through so they struggle.

What's not to be sold on.. he produced time and time again. Preseason.. then vs starters. + No fumbles. what does he need to do? 80 yrd TD run like AP?

I love a good love affair as much as the next guy. But let's wait until we have a good body of work to annoint Robinson. PT is still a more complete back in my opinion. And Robinson can't do what Spoles can do. So Sean will be happy to know that I agree with him. Give Robinson more snaps and let's see if he can hanlde things.

Re: Saints to 'evaluate' Khiry Robinson's snaps

I would feed the ball to him 15-20 times a game. The guy looks good he just needs more touches. It would keep D's in tighter and open up the passing game. A few screens to him would not hurt a thing either, I would like to see him in open field, not just hand offs.

The same thing was said about Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory too.

Obviously we shouldn't bench PT and Sproles and give the guy 25 carries, but he certainly has shown enough to warrant more touches.

Pass protection and ball security are probably 1st and foremost on Payton's mind. Unfortunately we could find out the hard way that he wasn't ready yet.

but but but Ingram is a stud and just neeeds more touched. Even AP couldnt run behind this line.

This is the only issue with Robinson. He may be great in protection but we have't seen that yet. To average 5.4ypc behind this line is awesome, and you have to consider he is only getting the ball in running time/formations, just makes that 5.4ypc more impressive.

Robinson is nice and all , but it's the offensive line that is responsible for that , even PT has been getting some good looks in the last 2 games ...

Really wanted ingram to play last game , as we have yet to see him run with a blocking line ... Maybe it's just not meant to be !

Offensive line did their job last game, but they arent the ones that have been stiff arming and making tacklers miss at the second level

I wouldn't mind more carries.. I'll sit back and marvel as ive done so far.

Wonder if PT's been teaching or carrying him under his wing its scary how similar they are minus the dreads Lol.

I temper the enthusiasm about that since New England's front 7 was absolutely decimated. You and I both should have been able to get 5 yards per carry against that front line. But at least they did what they were supposed to do. Baby steps...

Our O-line is starting to have a bit of a pulse in the run game. They did pretty well in opening a few holes and I think Collins isn't swinging-and-missing on his blocks from the FB position like he was the first month and a half...it was like watching a blind rat trying to find a peanut in a 40 acre corn field.

Robinson has done well in spite of the O-line's and Uncle Jed's development, and I'm pretty excited once they all get on the same page.

Oh, and if he develops quickly in the pass protection aspect, that'll get him in on passing downs. The opposing DC has to second guess which personnel to put in when KRob is in the game. Extra LB? Extra D-lineman? Extra Safety? Whichever one they go with, Payton and Brees exploits it. Win-win-win.

Re: Saints to 'evaluate' Khiry Robinson's snaps

Thomas, Ivory, and Robinson all show good balance, they can catch their footing after a hit and keep moving (like that leg tackle last weekend.) I haven't seen the same from Ingram, that's why Robinson is getting so many comparisons to PT.

Mine, too. He's still a bit careless on a few of his runs when he lets the ball get away from his body a little too far for my liking when he is breaking/juking tackles, but nothing like how Ivory use to tote it. He's a raw talent for sure, but if he can keep that ball close to his body consistently I'll be extremely happy.

He fumbled twice and lost one in the last preseason game with 28 touches, but I've noticed he is waaaaay more careful with it since that time. He just has that small tendency when he's breaking/juking tackles, but it's being coached up and it is obvious now that it has gotten better. Excited for this dude.

all i can say the saints made the right move keeping him on the finally roster. that said all i have seen looks promising so far and he deserve to keep getting additional touches behind the rest.

I trust him more today than yesterday but one bad turnover will change everything for him. bring him along slowly

i believe he almost had that turnover on his last run in the new england game

Re: Saints to 'evaluate' Khiry Robinson's snaps

Here is some perspective:

Khiry Robinson - 1st in YPG | 2nd in Total Yards (only played in 4 games, everyone else played in 6) | 1st in Yards Per Game | Tied for 1st inTDs | Only player with 4+ games of rushing and 0 INTs | HEALTHY

Why does ANYONE need a larger sample size to give him more snaps. That is how you end up finishing the season just like you started it.

As far as identifying his success with our o-line... You will have to prove the o-line intentionally blocks better for him.

BTW his best game yet was against NE with Evans and Strief both nursing injuries. I thought people wanted to get rid if this offensive line because "even Adrien Peterson couldn't run behind them". Maybe AP couldnt.. but KR can. :):bng:

Khiry Robinson is exactly what any team wants out of a rookie. A player that takes advantage of every touch he gets and fights to earn his spot. i will take that over he plays because of the size of his contract or draft position any day.

Re: Saints to 'evaluate' Khiry Robinson's snaps

As Danno said earlier, he played against second stringers in New England and worn down defenders against Bears and Phins. Let's see what he can do for 4 quarters before we're ready to give him the keys.

TheOak 10-21-2013 08:51 AM

Re: Saints to 'evaluate' Khiry Robinson's snaps

I would consider that only IF someone can tell me that for the remainder of our games no defenses will be tired or suffer injuries. If not, then he played against what showed up which he will do for the remainder of our games.

If we are going to start putting an asterisk next to everyone's performance based on the health and energy of opposing defenses then it needs to be done for all, including Sproles, Graham, and Brees.

Excuses for or against end up being a tangled web of confusion...

As to my previous post, I didn't say make him the showcase, I said increase his snap count. That being said, no one wants to give him the keys but if you want to truly stress his abilities, you have to do just that. You have to give him full snap count, 4 QTRs, screens, etc... Until you hand him the keys for a game you will never truly know.

He is new and shows promise which pushes him past Ingram's same ole same ole instantly. Good for him.
