Right Under Our Eyes

Have been watching (rewatching) some of the Saints games from this season and while they may not be at the same talent level (yet), the Saints defensive formation is awfully similar to the early version of the "46" defense as it was first put in Chicago...

I know for most it's a "Who Cares - It Works" philosophy, but I was taken aback when I pulled some 80's Bears Defense formations and really wanted to tip my hat to the coaching staff for taking the best players and using a formation that maximizes and complements our best talent in that way...

Way to Geaux!

Re: Right Under Our Eyes

well Rob Ryan is the son of Buddy, he who which created the "46" defense and made it famous as the D coordinator of the Bears and then as the head coach of the Eagles

Ryan's played the 4-6 everywhere he's been. I think that's a big part of why Harper and Bush have looked better this year. The 4-6 gives a "thumper" Safety a chance to shine.

Re: Right Under Our Eyes

The players love Ryan, as a Coach and as a man.

It is obvious. It glows like a light.

Tres bon. Fun to watch that level of passion.

At least it isn't confusing our players instead of theirs..........

Re: Right Under Our Eyes

when it not a 46 they are in a base 43 more than 34.

pats figured it out and now the rest of the nfl knows what to do against it. pats are an above average team at best but their coaches are top notch

lets see what adjustments are made by Roy Boy now that the cat is out of the bag. if we do nothing really different it will be a very long month

The 46 is the 4-3, just aligned differently

I thought they were mainly playing a 3-3-5 with 3 safeties?

Re: Right Under Our Eyes

Mitch you can take that alignment and flip it as we don't overload the weakside, but engage the strongside (i.e. Tight End, usually the Right Tackle)...

A big difference is in the way the "gaps" are assigned, which I think let's the players attack instead of diagnose and react...

Gotta disagree with my brother Hagan though, Saints came out with adjustmentS and was puttin the woodshed treatment to the Patties until Saints called off the dogs (i.e. Payton stopped running the ball, Rob-Boy rushed 3 in a prevent against a QB like Brady), a mistake our coaches won't make again...

We'll be fine, but it's fun and interesting to watch this amalgam defense evolve and adapt though...
