Ref shouldn’t have penalized Brees for false starts, ex-NFL official say

1 Attachment(s)
Former NFL head of officiating Mike Pereira said during a FOX Sports 1 segment that referee Terry McAulay was wrong to call Saints quarterback Drew Brees for back-to-back false start penalties during Sunday’s 35-17 win against the Buffalo Bills, according to Pro Football Talk.

Pereira on Tuesday told the audience that quarterbacks should be penalized for false starts if they make motions designed to draw the defense offside, but he said all Brees did was raise his hands to prepare for a snap while in the shotgun formation.

“How can that be a false start?” Pereira said, according to Pro Football Talk. “Come on. That’s not enough for a false start. And not only do they call him once, they call him twice.”

It was at the end of the first quarter and start of the second with the Saints up 7-0 that Brees was first flagged for false start on a third-and-1 from Buffalo’s 11. Brees and the Saints faced a third-and-11 after the second false start penalty.

Brees (26-of-34 for 332 yards and 5 touchdowns) then threw an incompletion, and Garrett Hartley missed a 38-yard field goal to end the drive for New Orleans.

Brees afterward told reporters that McAulay didn’t explain to him why he was penalized the first time, and the quarterback thought the second time was for moving his hands.

I'm sorry, this guy never gets it right. Now I know why he is the EX!! Remember that 38 yard missed FG. Remember.

I was super disapointed in that call.

Terry has been around long enough to know better ... if you can't be fair and make the right call, you should be holding the yard markers instead of HEAD Ref. Cmon McAulay, give us a break once in a while.. we BOTH went to the same college (LSU)!!

It certainly fits the SaintsBro Theory.... score was 7-0, Saints were driving and could easily go up 14-0, Drew and the Saints were starting to run away with the game, too early, so let's "clip their wings" and set them back a bit with some arbitrary calls...keep the Bills in it for a while.

There had to be some reason why they were watching it so close. Maybe the Bills were complaining about it. But I looked at it a few times and it wasn't anything that you don't see from dozens of other QBs in the NFL in shotgun formation. It is just too inconsistent.

And all these crap calls on CBs are making watching these games no fun sometimes. I saw two calls on the Seahawks in their game that looked absolutely positively just normal tackle stuff. On one I'll give you the WR wasn't looking but the hit was a baby tap. When will it get to the point of the WWF because I want out before then.

What other sport can I turn to? Baseball (zzzz)? Basketball (a little but too predictable)? Soccer (booorrriiinnnggg)? Golf it is.

He's on someone's payroll in Vegas. Don't think for a second that games aren't manipulated. Billions of dollars are involved every weekend... How could the game not be tainted?!

We WERE NOT supposed to with the Super Bowl. We were just supposed to be lucky to be there. The Anointed One was supposed to run away with it and he knew it, which is WHY he stormed off without congratulating Drew. Still a bad taste in my mouth over that.

Peyton Manning can kiss ** ***!

Exactly... Refs can't stop someone like Tracy Porter from jumping a route. But if a call looks fishy like the false starts called on Drew against the Bills, that's because Vegas wants to keep it close. Sad but true.

We don't need a break, we just need one set of rules.

These refs are just getting out of hand. For him to "not explain the penalty" to Drew Brees is inexcusable. When are the refs going to fined by the NFL for horrible screw ups on their part?

On top of it, I'm still mad they didn't give us the timeout in the Pats game. For a star, Drew sure is getting worked over by the refs.

That play was the worst. I think everyone was expecting a TO or delay penalty, so when they noticed the ball was snapped, it was like pee wee league running around.

And poor shorty Drew can't see Graham limping coming across the line, so he throws it and...no ups :(
