Former NFL head of officiating Mike Pereira said during a FOX Sports 1 segment that referee Terry McAulay was wrong to call Saints quarterback Drew Brees for back-to-back false start penalties during Sunday’s 35-17 win against the Buffalo Bills, according to Pro Football Talk.
Pereira on Tuesday told the audience that quarterbacks should be penalized for false starts if they make motions designed to draw the defense offside, but he said all Brees did was raise his hands to prepare for a snap while in the shotgun formation. “How can that be a false start?” Pereira said, according to Pro Football Talk. “Come on. That’s not enough for a false start. And not only do they call him once, they call him twice.” It was at the end of the first quarter and start of the second with the Saints up 7-0 that Brees was first flagged for false start on a third-and-1 from Buffalo’s 11. Brees and the Saints faced a third-and-11 after the second false start penalty. Brees (26-of-34 for 332 yards and 5 touchdowns) then threw an incompletion, and Garrett Hartley missed a 38-yard field goal to end the drive for New Orleans. Brees afterward told reporters that McAulay didn’t explain to him why he was penalized the first time, and the quarterback thought the second time was for moving his hands. read more |

Terry has been around long enough to know better ... if you can't be fair and make the right call, you should be holding the yard markers instead of HEAD Ref. Cmon McAulay, give us a break once in a while.. we BOTH went to the same college (LSU)!!

It certainly fits the SaintsBro Theory.... score was 7-0, Saints were driving and could easily go up 14-0, Drew and the Saints were starting to run away with the game, too early, so let's "clip their wings" and set them back a bit with some arbitrary calls...keep the Bills in it for a while.

Re: Ref shouldn’t have penalized Brees for false starts, ex-NFL official say
There had to be some reason why they were watching it so close. Maybe the Bills were complaining about it. But I looked at it a few times and it wasn't anything that you don't see from dozens of other QBs in the NFL in shotgun formation. It is just too inconsistent.
And all these crap calls on CBs are making watching these games no fun sometimes. I saw two calls on the Seahawks in their game that looked absolutely positively just normal tackle stuff. On one I'll give you the WR wasn't looking but the hit was a baby tap. When will it get to the point of the WWF because I want out before then. What other sport can I turn to? Baseball (zzzz)? Basketball (a little but too predictable)? Soccer (booorrriiinnnggg)? Golf it is. |
One thing I learned from drinking. You should always go Christmas caroling with a group. Oh, and always in mid-December.
