Austin Johnson

In the Chicago game earlier this year Jed Collins had 4 catches for 17 yards and 3 Carries for 11 yards. Now you look at this and say, these numbers suck, but in reality they were a key part of a New Orleans win. Because of these plays we were able to control the ball nicely. I then thought to myself, what if this became a thing with someone who is more capable. That's where I think Austin Johnson comes in. He is a very well-rounded athlete and could be a huge weapon on third and medium when Jimmy Graham is getting all the attention (That is if we sign him next year.) Everyone expects a throw past the the first down marker, and that would be the perfect time to hit Austin Johnson with a nice short yardage pass to keep the drive alive. Obviously he would never have 50 yard games or even 25 yard games, but could be another trick up the Saints sleeve to keep the opponents defense in check. Might be kind of far-fetched but I believe it could work.

I've always thought we could use someone like FB Mike Alstott from Tampa.

Re: Austin Johnson

Wow, can't believe I actually saw Auston Johnson's name come up in this thread. We were acquaintances in high school till he graduated. Johnson and Ifo Ekpre-Olomu (CB, Oregon) were the best players on the High School team. He could be a great addition but I remember him being a LB so he'll have to convert to a FB

Austin played awesome in preseason, catching passes and bouncing off defenders

When he's ready to go up against the 1's, I'd be all for it

Re: Austin Johnson

Ahhhh he mentioned markers... It kills me when a certain few receivers that will go nameless turn and catch 2 yards before the marker on 3rd.

I noticed the same thing. Much more athletic than Jed. He has natural running ability.

I'd imagine Jed is a better blocker at this point (both how to and who to) but I could see Austin giving him a run at his roster spot next year.

Re: Austin Johnson

If he can't block I doubt him being useful but I wouldn't mind trying it out. Another weapon to the crowed arsonal.

A full back is supposed to block and Jed does it well.
