Muffing a punt would be exactly the reason you would remove someone from punt return duties. The only thing totally unforgivable on a punt return is to lose possession of it to the other team.

Ironically Sproles had the same issue the game before, but chances that will ever happen again are almost 0. He is our safest option to field punts. That ability can't be taken lightly. You simply don't just try another option to see how it goes.

Same reason a good running back will be benched (see Reggie Bush and Steven Ridley this past week) when they fumble. It's not tolerated.
