A new Kicker
Move over Garret Hartley, we are tired of your inconsistency, So much that I've been looking at all the kickers to come in the 2014 Draft and graded them respectfully.
1. Chandler Catanzaro, Clemson Height: 6-2 Weight: 200 This guy is my favorite, he is clutch! 12-13 this year and the only one he missed was more than 50 yards. Last year he was 18-19 and had 2 clutch field goals for game winners vs LSU. This guy is extremely over-looked and we could most likely get him with our pick in the 6th round. 2. Cairo Santos, Tulane Height: 5-8 Weight: 160 If we don't get Catanzaro I think we need Santos. He was 14-20 this year, 4 of those misses came from over 50 yards so you can't really blame him (He was 2-6 on 50+) The kid doesn't have much of a boot but is very solid. I'm sure some teams will pass on him because of his size, but who cares, he's a kicker. I expect him to fall into the 7th round, so we could trade down if we wanted to. 3. Chris Boswell, Rice Height: 6-2 Weight: 210 This guy is a major wild card, he started off his Senior season missing his first 3. However, the guy jumped out of his slump and shined, he made 13-18, 3 misses from 50+. In 2012 he made 6, that's right 6 FG from 50+ and missed 2. This guy has power, but he gets hot and cold. 4. Everyone else There are some people who stand out more than others, but in all I think Hartley would be a better option over any of the others. They will most likely all be available in free agency so we could bring in 1 or 2 but I just don't see one taking Hartley's roster spot. Do you guys think we need a new kicker? If I see Hartley on the streets i'll buy him a beer to thank him for a superbowl win, but I just don't think he is a viable option anymore. |
Re: A new Kicker
No way we draft a kicker. Thats just stupid.
|
Re: A new Kicker
Btw is that kicker the Jets drafted in the first round still around?
|
Re: A new Kicker
bad time to talk about NOLA kickers and me -- we have (arguably) the best of our history wrapped up in kickers through out our our brief 45 some odd years with "Kickers."
Kickers (like it or not) IS New Orleans Saints football - from THE BOOT to Anderson to Ambush... (Why isn't Morten Anderson in the Fall of Fame? K.M.A. Jan Stenerud.) This deserves more discussion on the New Orleans Saint's Site than from this old goat. The record falls and 3 people notice. Sheeze there was a decade and a half when that was all we had to boast of. |

I could care-less about that record being broke, even analysts have put an asterisk on it already. It was in Denver with the altitude...
|
Re: A new Kicker
I agree and I was completely heartbroken when Hartley lost the game tonight. He did lose it, right?

Re: A new Kicker
thanks to both of you - I knew the record would fall. but i thought it would get some sorta notice. Even on a Saint's site I am the only one that recognizes it as being a sentinel moment. not sure if i feel old or betrayed.
it was a big deal - it was. |

I heard the record was broken earlier this afternoon, and made a moment of it in my own way, as did thousand of Saints fans. Importance of the event is not judged by responses to your individual thread. |

That said, Dempsey held the record forever. It was already broken in preseason, and it was tied. Second time Denver tied or claimed to beat the record. We got in a big forum argument when I think Janikowski or someone else claimed they really had the record in the NFL a few years back. I don't know why the damn thing gets so controversial. Oh yeah, I read someone claimed it was broken in like 1932, but they didn't have exact measurements back then. Again, seems like people contested it around the NFL when it was brought up. The record moved on. Besides, so many people aren't old enough to know or remember. I was not there, because I was born not much before it happened. I started making my appearance in Tulane stadium before it closed, and was in the dome for the first game there. By that time, it was legend. It was a great record, great history. Like someone said, they already have asterisks in front of the new record because of altitude. Seems to me some contested Dempsey before Prater came along. |
Re: A new Kicker
thanks for that.
you knew exactly the right thing to say. |
Re: A new Kicker
Well we won a super bowl before that record was broken.. so I'm not complaining.

Re: A new Kicker
i was in the stands for "The Kick" that was my first and most exciting moment ever at a game. it deserves a big * next to it. big difference in kicking locations and rule changes. but all records fall and the leagues make no effort to educate fans as to the differences in the records. shame.

Re: A new Kicker
can anyone remember they argued putting an asterick on Tom Demseys record. Because of his handicap. it was news for awhile ,until it blew over or disallowed. its going to hold up and will be broken again and again. the mile high affect and the wind will blow one day for someone that will get a 70 or so yarder.

http://i2.cdn.turner.com/si/2012/wri...om-dempsey.jpg Seems like any team we played had a comment about that record, especially the Cowgirls when they were good during the Landry years. When you successfully defended the record, all they would do is turn and laugh at you because your team never went to a playoff or had a single winning season or even sniffed a Superbowl. It was like ancient troll fest from their fans. They were right. All that is in our rear view mirror. For me, as a long time fan, the Superbowl changed everything about the organization. The current regime of Sean Payton and Brees have shattered so many records that they eclipse the past. |
Re: A new Kicker
Doesn't matter, everyone knows the balls are juiced now.

Re: A new Kicker
What's to get upset over a 64 yd FG? It was going to happen sooner or later. Big Ben broke Terry Bradshaw's TD record too. Oh yeah, that doesn't count cause it was a 3 yd pass and in the snow.

Re: A new Kicker
i say we keep the TALENT we have and have a loyalty purge.

Re: A new Kicker
it was the greatest Saints moment of the 20th century. Thanks to SP and DB for giving us more to boast of in the 21st.

Don't know how you can say he doesn't have much of a boot when his career long is 57 yards and hit a 56 yarder this year. He didn't miss a kick in 2012 and missed only 2 this year between 30 and 50. If he is a UDFA I would like to see him brought in to compete against Hartley. |
Re: A new Kicker
If you guys think drafting a kicker in the 6th round is stupid then look back to 1979 when the Saints drafted Russel Erxleben 11th overall. A huge draft bust, only lasted 5 years in the league.
|
Re: A new Kicker
Kickers are streaky. If you have a decent one, and we do, no sense in spending the time and effort to find another one. He'll have his ups & downs as well so unless the decent kicker you have dies, theres no sense in running down another one to replace him.

Never everr draft a kick. Sign them as a free agent

Re: A new Kicker
We do not call for the replacement of a kicker after he misses A kick... We do when he is progressively getting worse and ends up in the bottom 25 % of the league on accuracy and we are about to head into the playoffs.
2013 NFL Player Kicking Stats - National Football League - ESPN Garrett Hartley Stats - New Orleans Saints - ESPN We also want him gone when he is 69% at home. 42% when we win by 15+ points. 50% on Monday 63% on Turf 71% indoors 66% when tied Garrett Hartley Stats, Splits - New Orleans Saints - ESPN |
Re: A new Kicker
I'm ready for Hartley to go. Sure, he's nailed a few big kicks, but 2009 seems like a long time ago, and it's not as if we've been impatient with him.
When it comes to kickers, I'd prefer signing a veteran. A handful of steady legs hit the FA market every offseason, so you might as well bring in a couple for a camp battle (or have a rookie / veteran camp battle, for that matter). |
Re: A new Kicker
What kind of poll is this? Next you'll ask who our starting QB should be...
|
Re: A new Kicker
Hartley misses field goals from the 30-40 yards. In the NFL those should be considered chip ins. We just haven't noticed as of late because he hasn't had to kick as much.
|
Re: A new Kicker
Quote:
In the first 6 games this season Hartley went 14 of 16, then over a 3 game span he went 2 of 6.], since then he hasn't missed a field goal in the last 4 games, going 5 for 5. He's missed 6 field goals this season and 4 of them came over a 3 week period. Just my opinion, but that's streaky. He's dropped from 7th most accurate active kicker to 14th, just me, but that's decent. |
Re: A new Kicker
Quote:
His first season is moot, should not be in his average. He was suspended for the Adderall and has never been as accurate. But you want to look at the big picture and I get that so you and pumpkindriver (assuming his "like" of your reply denotes agreement") should look at the situational stats. What you have is a dome team that plays more than 1/2 it's games in a dome, but it's kicker is less accurate indoors on turf. Why do you think he is 17% better on the road. That's fixing an electrical socket with a spoon. When you are streaky your accuracy is up and down across the board... Hartley is not streaky, I have and can identify where his accuracy issues consistently are... Year in, year out. |
Re: A new Kicker
I really couldn't care less about next year.
|
Re: A new Kicker
You guys still want Hartley as the damn kicker? He missed it from 27 yards, how much worse can you get?
|
Re: A new Kicker
A new kicker is not really on the high priority list for me, O-Line needs a lot of work before we even consider a new kicker
|
Re: A new Kicker
Because having a kick blocked is the Kicker's fault... lol
The Saints got dominated on the line in all 3 phases. As far as Hartley goes, he's average. Nothing special. Not close to being the worst. You guys should check out averages for most kickers in the league. |
Re: A new Kicker
Quote:
When a defender blocks a kick while it is coming off the kickers foot that is the lines fault. When a kick is blocked going over the line it is the kickers fault.. He kicked it too low. But you are correct.. he is not last in the league. He is just two away from that dubious honor lol. 2013 NFL Player Kicking Stats - National Football League - ESPN The catch here is that the two guys below Hartley miss 50+ yarders and Hartley is missing 20-49 yarders. |
