METAIRIE, La. (AP) -- Sean Payton is putting nearly all of his players on notice, whether he winds up making any significant late-season changes or not.

The New Orleans Saints have long praised their head coach's knack for motivating his charges by knowing what to say and when to say it.

On Monday, when asked if his team's latest loss in St. Louis requires adjustments in areas such as left tackle or kicker, Payton responded like this: ''Listen, I think we're looking closely at every element. You know, I told the players today in the team meeting we're looking closely at each aspect of this team.

''I just think it's important for us to do that,'' Payton continued. ''Whether it's the tackle position, whether it's a player on defense ... we're going to look closely at what our options are and what gives us the best chance.''

Re: Payton putting nearly all Saints on notice

you know i can blame the players for bad play.

coaches need to step up an be put on notice also. its embarrassing when you watch the entire coaching staff huddled on the side line playing rock paper siccors as to what idea to try.

Then to have an offense come out at half time and still struggle?

that was just as bad a loss any of the others. team loss all the way around. every one did half their job coaches included

Here's something I've never known the answer to:
How much involvement does Pete Carmichael have with the offense now? I know he used to call the plays, but SP took over that role this season, right? So what does Carmichael do on gamedays now?

We also need a new special teams coach imo.

Tired of Brees having to gift wrap balls to receivers, he made some bad throws but Stills is the only one I've seen make a consistent effort to get a ball off target recently. Meach, Jimmy, if it's not where it should be forget it. You have to go for it every play like it's yours.

You just dont see the effort that is what is wrong. Look at Moores production this year. Recievers have not been seperating giving brees a clear shot. Bet we see the effort this week.

Re: Payton putting nearly all Saints on notice

On the players: it's about time and should have been in place since the season started. No one is entitled to start at any position. It's a business.

On the coaches: You can gameplan only so much. If players start dropping passes or passes don't get to them, or if the o-line isn't blocking that week when they blocked the best defense in the league the week before, how can coaches gameplan for this? If defensive backs have spectacular games the week before and play like they're "walking through" the paces the next week, how can the defensive coordinator gameplan for that?

How does anyone gameplan their weakest performance? Run victory formation? What I saw Sunday was the same as the Seahawks game - some damn sloppy football from some over-confidant players that get out gunned and out manned because they're head is not in the game. If players played their positions, coaches would be praised as geniuses because everything works.

Re: Payton putting nearly all Saints on notice

I once brought up the Pete Carrol method of whom ever is practicing the best that week plays the most but that didn't go over well.

I would have flown the team to Carolina Monday morning and found a place to practice there.. get them settled... less of an away game setting.
