Terrible play calling. He played not to lose instead of playing to win. He ran a prevent offense. |
Re: I am almost done with Payton
Giving the ball back to Carolina the way our D had handled him all day should have been a good decision. Throwing a possible INT in that field position would have been a gimme FG for Carolina. Who knew Cam would make the only three good throws he made all day with only a minute left.
The screen game was shut down all day, Brees was under constant pressure, and a incompletion would have stopped the clock for them. I just don't think Payton was totally in the wrong trying to run the clock down with ineffective runs. |

vs New England, vs New York Jets and now vs Carolina Payton gives all the BS in the post game of how we will learn from our mistakes but he doesn't really care, he's too stubborn to change his approach now |
Re: I am almost done with Payton
Not sure about "done with Payton" but after this game yesterday I think it's a legitimate time to pause and ask the question if maybe we have seen the ceiling of the Payton/Brees era and this whole incarnation of the Saints.
Like it or not, Sean Payton is still 0-3 in the playoffs on the road. This game yesterday might as well have been a playoff game, and they lost. Same with Green Bay in '11 and a couple of other key road game losses you could probably point to, with playoff or seeding implilcations over the years. The Saints are 3-5 on the road this year and were 3-5 last year without Payton. Drew Brees is 6-12 career on the road against teams with winning records. Of course, the Super Bowl year we had a very special defense and the #1 seed and home field all the way. I was astonished when I recently learned that Drew was actually 6-11 on the road (now 6-12), against winning teams, and I wonder how many Saints fans may realize that, because it is never brought up. Calling them "pass happy," finesse, non-physical, complaints about the playcalling, can't win in cold weather, get beat by physical teams, no run game, can't close out a game, blah blah blah -- maybe these criticisms are all just variations on the same thing... Maybe there is a ceiling to this style of Brees/Payton football and the mold of this team he's built -- maybe there's a limit on how far it can go. Maybe this formula is great for winning games in the Dome, where they are awesome, but maybe it does not work on the road. Without the comfort of the Dome in the post season, a coach who is 0-3 in postseason road games and a QB is who is 6-12 against winners, is always going to be an uphill battle in the post season, in anything other than getting the #1 seed position and being at home all the way. |

Payton is supposed to be the offensive mastermind, and there haven't been any significant injuries to make excuses. That's why his play calling, and the horrible play of Brees and the O-line on the road all season have been so disappointing. I'm not calling for a firing or anything, but I think the frustration is more than justified at this point. If it were any other team with this kind of talent playing this way, everyone on here would be mocking them. But whenever there is a dissenting opinion on the Saints an online version of a riot ensues. |

A road loss here and there is expected. But the failures of this team on the road go beyond the norm. It's actually kind of disturbing. It feels like they either don't want to play or they are scared half of the time. Then, when we are actually competitive in a road game, we choke in mind blowing ways. There is clearly some sort of mental block, and I don't know what you do about that. You'd think that over the years they would have been kicked in the nuts enough times to want to prove doubters wrong, but instead they just become increasingly inept in all things road related. I mean, we lost to a 7-9 team in the PLAYOFFS on the road. What more can ya say. |
Re: I am almost done with Payton
We have some cry baby fans. You take Payton off this team And at best Saints are a .500 team. They're are a whole lot of teams in this league who would love to have coach Payton. A whole a lot of team would also love to be 10-5.
