SAINTS, ROBERT MEACHEM HOPE TO HAMMER OUT NEW CONTRACT,

Both the Saints and Robert Meachem would like to hammer out a deal that would bring the veteran wide receiver back to New Orleans for 2014, more than one league source has confirmed.

The Saints and Meachem’s camp had broached the topic of a new contract by Friday evening, one of the sources said. Of course, what will ultimately determine whether Meachem rejoins the Black and Gold is if he and the team can agree on how much money he’s worth to the Saints.

As dreeeeeeeeppppppp as the draft this year is at WR.

Why?

Speed sells. I'm okay with this.

Vet minimum, and if someone beats him out, fine.

In my eyes, he has disappeared way too often in games. If he resigns great, if he doesn't no biggie.

Re: SAINTS, ROBERT MEACHEM HOPE TO HAMMER OUT NEW CONTRACT,

It would be great if we could keep him at a realistic price for the team. He knows the system and has alot of speed. Restructure another receivers contract like colston and we'll be ahead of the game. Tag Graham at TE and tell him we will sign him next year at wr price with a bonus to make up for the discount this year.

lee909 02-22-2014 11:46 AM

Re: SAINTS, ROBERT MEACHEM HOPE TO HAMMER OUT NEW CONTRACT,

It would be cheaper to sign him now on a back loaded deal than pay the price of the tag.I dont like the idea of tagging Graham as you just have to wonder how a player will react in regards to making the catches that hurt over the middle without a long term deal to compensate for injuries

We are cap strapped. Why pay a 7 year vet minimum of $855k when you can grab two rookies at $420k each and save 15k?

What happened to the whole trade down for more picks train of thought. Letting him walk gives you two more options to explore.

I would guess that Meachem is a know commodity, and its possible we lose Moore.

Having a veteran that knows the system and is relatively cheap is a pretty good reason to bring him to camp.

I suspect they aren't worried about the 400K savings at a position that might be shorthanded on experienced players.

You can still bring several rookies in to compete, and if Meachem is a final 53 cut, you can resign him the following week without his contract being guaranteed and then his contract becomes week to week.

I don't see a downside here, considering we might lose Lance Moore, and perhaps Joe Morgan.

The down side is that you can't be over the cap at all and it limits us to prospects.

Yes Moore and Meach would be a loss of Vets but my opinion is that Colston/Brees/Payton can get a rookie up to speed just fine.

I just see it as a limiting factor in evaluating new talent.

Got one.

I would play it like we did last year. Meachem isn't offered anything until we are done with FA, and we have vetted rookies. If we do not find equal talent for less $ then sign him to vet min.

Re: SAINTS, ROBERT MEACHEM HOPE TO HAMMER OUT NEW CONTRACT,

Meachem actually played pretty well, he sparked our offense vs san fran when they were struggling with a 50 yard catch and run, then made another huge grab later in the game

like oak said, vet minimum and let them fight it out in camp

at the minute, stills is better but meachem is a good blocking WR

You may have misread what i intended.

Vet minimum - Only after camp is done and we know that there was nothing there of better value. We can sign him 4th week of preseason.

I'd like to have him just because Brees knows him well, Payton knows him well. He is a known asset to this team.

Maybe I should have said that we need another speedy receiver to run the deep routes and open those lanes for Moore and Colston like when we had Henderson and Meachem.;)

Stills and Morgan are definitely faster than Meachem. Moore is close. In fact the only WR on the roster Meachem is actually without a doubt faster than is Colston, and if you were to give Colston the benefit of one offseason without some knee/ankle/leg surgery and I'm not sure it's so clear-cut anymore. Don't get me wrong, I like Meachem in general, wouldn't mind seeing him back, but for a guy with a reputation of being a deep threat he is very average when it comes to speed.

Morgan, yes
Stills, maybe
Moore, no way.

If we sign him it will be a combonation of familiarity, productivity, health, and run blocking. They guy is always in on running plays.

Stills maybe? The guy ran 4.28 and 4.34 at the combine last year. Pretty safe to say he's the fastest guy on the team. Even Sproles doesn't have giddy up like that.

Oops, I don't know why I thought he ran a in the mid 4.4's. Yeah, I think 4.38 (his unofficial combine time) is pretty damn fast. I don't know why they call it an "unofficial time" at the combine. What happened?

But Lance couldn't break 4.5 if he fell off a cliff.

Meachem ran a 4.39 at the combine.

Re: SAINTS, ROBERT MEACHEM HOPE TO HAMMER OUT NEW CONTRACT,

I for one take 30m to run the 40yd (used to be 20m).

Is say Stills still runs that same 40, but 6+ year vets have added a little time.

Line em all up for a 40 and my $ is on stills.

With that haircut, he has been running for his life for a while.

That was a loooong time ago. People talk about Colston like he's old and slowed down, but Meachem is only one year younger than Colston and has had just about the same number of surgeries.

Meachem's value is he knows the system well, has chemistry with Brees, is a good blocker and is great at tracking down deep passes. He's worth a lot more to us than he would be to most teams, but fortunately for us that also keeps his price down. I hope we keep him as long as it's a reasonable deal. Keep in mind he only caught 16 passes last year.

Nothing wrong with that, but I'd rather someone actually beat him out rather than just cutting him and hoping we can find someone better.

I think at 800K, its worth signing and bringing him into camp. I also hope that some young hot shot actually earns Meachem's roster spot.

Of course if that 800K means we can't sign a key free-agent, then I say "go long Robert, no longer, longer, longer, keep going..."

I am not disagreeing with you guys, I just have a little different take on handling it.

My thoughts:

1. He was available and no one picked him up but us last season. So I do not see anyone taking him, other than the Saints.

2. He is known, not going to see anything we do not already know from him in camp. Why waste the reps? Why risk the injury?

3. Let him float until we are done culling new talent, then pick him up to start the season if we haven't seen better in camp.

Re: SAINTS, ROBERT MEACHEM HOPE TO HAMMER OUT NEW CONTRACT,

I am not sure what kind of 'negotiations' could be going on. He got a million last year while still cashing a Charger paycheck, and he isn't getting more than that.

He had some solid 40 catch seasons for us, and the fact is he didn't fit in at SD, for whatever reason. He can still fill the 4th or 5th role, and is certainly better than Toon or Tanner. 16 catches doesn't look like much, but as a 4th receiver on a team with Graham, Sproles, and PT, you aren't going to be targeted much.

We bring receivers along VERY slowly (Stills is the exception), so why not keep Meachem and let a rookie develop.

Not sure how slow we bring WR along.

Colston started 12 games his rookie season.
I looked up most of the receivers I could think of that we had as rookies and near all of their 1st/2nd seasons look like their last two seasons.

Henderson was just slow to come along period...

But they were both niche receivers anyway.

Once Payton trusts the receiver, it's on.

Toon would have had more receptions if he could get out if his own way.

Moore just took a while to develop.

Morgan can't stay healthy.
