You know, I agree that we need a football man at GM, and Randy Meuller is probably a bit better than Mickey Loomis, but I think there are reasons why Meuller hasn't gotten a job yet. Lets re-cap some of Randy's less than stellar moves shall we.
Keep in mind my memory is a bit foggy so feel free to correct me. I believe he really only had two years of drafting and FA pick-ups.

Supposed big-name free agents brought in under Meuller...
David Sloan
Albert Connell
Grady Jackson
Norman Hand

Quality players leave under Randy's watch...
Willie Roaf
LeRoi Glover
Joe Johnson
Rickey Williams

Draft picks acquired under Randy Meuller. Although its not really fair to include 2000 since he had a 2nd, 4th, and the rest 5's thru 7's
Sedrick Hodge
Kenny Smith
Moran Norris
Michael Hawthorne
Oneme Ojo
Tutan Reyes
Austin Wheatley
Chad Morton

It was a re-cap of his \"less than stellar moves\"
I think Stallworth Grant and Bentley were Loomis era. But I could be wrong. Loomis took over in 2002. 2002 and 2003 draft are his. 2000 and 2001 are Meuller.

Under Mueller and I can\'t say as I remember all the particulars, but I can remember sitting with my brother during draft day and saying, \" Finally, someone who drafts the positions we think we need on this team!\" That hasn\'t happened for a while now. And no, some of those positions didn\'t pan out but at least we took the shots where we needed them. And didn\'t Mueller head up the Ricky draft?

If you want to credit Loomis with the 2002 draft go ahead. Mueller was fired like an hour before it started?

I think that Mueller was a big part of Haslett\'s early success. More importantly, the forgotten man IMO seems to be Ron Zook. I think Zook impacted this team more than anyone else. His loss may have been the single biggest.

Whoa, I\'m not taking up for Loomis over Mueller. I think Meuller was the better GM. I just think he had his fair share of screw-ups too. Ideally we should hire a GM better than both of them.
Phil Savage comes to mind as well as Pioli. Both would be a significant upgrade over Meuller and Loomis.
I wouldn\'t mind keeping Loomis around for his contract savvy though.

No, I thought Meuller was fired mid-way through 2001 because of the Ricky Williams deal where it was believed Benson was pisst at Meuller for not keeping him the loop.
Donte was drafted the year after that, 2002. Loomis, Rick, and Haz were the ones that drafted Donte/Grant etc.

I read somewhere that Meuller was getting paid for the remainder of his contract as long as he didn\'t take another GM job. And it\'s big money. Over 100k yearly I think. Not postive where but I recall reading it. And I think it ends this year. Look for Meuller to take a job this year. And by the way Finks (love him) made some mistakes too.
