Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Saints are "shopping" Pierre Thomas and Lance Moore, and "could be open" to dealing Darren Sproles.
The Saints need to clear cap space, and offloading Thomas and Moore would free up more than $5 million. Trading Thomas ahead of his age-30 season would also help clear the logjam in New Orleans' backfield. Thomas has been considered a candidate for release because of his $2.9 million cap number/salary, but he was by far the Saints most effective back in 2013. 2014 is the final year of his contract, so he could definitely draw some trade interest. Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
I'll bet they have 20 RB's/WR's targeted in this draft.

Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
I like this lets get younger folks ! Sure we have a special place for these players n our black n gold hearts but younger is the way to go
|
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
I just heard this on NFLSirius. I then used the search feature here and didn't need to post :)

Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
It's business, we are too deep with quality RBs and Stills has proven to be a cheaper replacement for Moore.
That doesn't change the fact that seeing Lance Moore, or Pierre Thomas in another teams uniform will knot my gut for a while. I feel like they grew up in my house. |
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
What are we going to get for PT or Moore? An 8th rounder? :D
|
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
I am keep saying...
WR in the first round looks more and more solid. If you know you are going WR as BPA at 27 and the talent that is there is a good shot at landing a roster spot why now shop for picks. |

Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
That's a whole lot of folks to let loose. Not sure I want them to go, but if they can get younger guys at a better price, so be it.
Not sure on the Pierre Thomas call at all, but I guess we will see. We got lots of good WRs, not so many good RBs. |
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
I still say we trade Ingram...even if it for a late round pick. This draft is so deep that I would be happy with a 6th round pick for him. My reason for saying this is that I don't see him resigning with us next year so before he walks let's get something for him...and then choose between Sproles and Thomas.
As much as I love Moore's TD dances...which he should have quite a few stored up since he hasn't been getting there too much lately...its time to let him go... |

Two 8th rounders and a table dance from Rob Ryan should get us a 3rd. ;) |
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
No surprise to see that they are reportedly "shopping" these guys. I thought we would cut ties with Lance as early as last month but not so much Sproles & Pierre.
To be continued ... |
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
It would be weird to not see all those names on the team sheet when the new season begins.
Still, I guess business is business as they say, I guess the coaches and front office know what they are doing! Gulp! |
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
If i was a team like the Colts,Browns id be looking at both Thomas and Moore.
Moore would be a excellent receiver for both teams and the Colts could do with a good RB a Richardson isnt getting it done and Thomas can pick up a Blitz and offer Luck or a Browns rookie a solid safety blanket. The texans would be wise to try and get Thomas too,$2.9ml or less if you extend would give them a normally healthy RB with plenty of tread on the tires to take the work load of Foster. |
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
Love all three, but the only that would really hurt is PT.
Production of Sproles & Moore was way down, and neither is cheap. PT is a bargain in comparison and as stated above, what could we get? Smart GM's will just wait until we cut them and get either at a better price. Why pay Moore $5m when you could have the Saints pay half? |
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
As long as Ingram is gone then I'll be happy. PT still has tread on the tires and Moore could redo his contract and stay home.
|
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
They're shopping all of them hoping we get something for one of them.
I seriously doubt we get rid of all of them. We just need some cap room that one of them, maybe two, could provide. And wanting to trading Ingram is not very wise. |

So what could we get in return? If we are trying to clear cap space then signing a free agent would have to be for cheap.

Adding a 5th or 6th would just be gravy. |

Hell and yes.

Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
I definitely oppose letting Sproles go. Of the three, I'm most willing to part with Lance Moore. Trading PT doesn't make a lot of sense to me given how freaking productive he was last year. It's always sad to lose these long-standing veterans that have become a part of our family. These are three of my very favorites though.
|
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
Sproles' production was definitely down and I think we should try and get what we can while we can. A 4th or 5th rounder would be sufficent and we should be able to draft Dri Archer or someone like that. A nice weapon on both Special Teams and in the screen/short pass game as Sproles was.
I don't see us trading PT. If anything he restructures and stays as the Deuce McAllister to Khiry and our draft pick or UDFA. He's too important to our protection and is best back at picking up the blitz, and with Strief not resigned that could become a problem. Moore can go. Too many receivers in this draft and we can find his replacement. Hate to see him leave, he's been one of my favorite Saints, but bottom line is this is a business and his time is up with us. |
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
One of them has to go we need the cap space
|
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
I don't see us trading anyone. Maybe Sproles or PT but that's it. Like someone said earlier, why eat the contract if you can wait for them to be released? Moore is going to get cut. I think we get no takers for Sproles because of his contract. PT may get some looks but I'm not for getting rid of either of the RBs.
|
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
I'm really hoping Payton is going with a power run game, the only 1 I would keep is PT for quality depth, Sproles should draw a solid 4th possibly a 3rd to the right team, Moore I really can't say, if PT goes he should draw a 4th but I am still hesitant to let him go. There are some good power backs in the 3rd, 4th rounds and most teams don't view RB.'s the way they use to, lucky for us. With this play from Payton I think the O-line will get fixed first before any running back or WR gets picked. I think this is a smart move on our part because to beat a physical team you have to be physical also. Cute time is over.

Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
Lance Moore should yield the most in trade value; copycat league and Lance has those rare, sure hands that most teams will covet to move the chains...
He's been a fan favorite, especially the ladies, but if a team is willing to send back a fourth round draft pick, he should be able to continue to keep his salary level for another three seasons which would be good for him as well... |

As my previous post stated I hate to see him on another team but it is what it is and regardless of my feelings about Pierre Thomas I think he needs to go for two reasons. 1. Prove he is not a product of Sean Paytons offense. 2. Most importantly, the loss of PT and Sproles is going to somewhat force Sean Payton to be true to some sort of ground game. His weapons make it too easy for him to start passing and abandon our ground game.:bng: |
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
You can't hang the screen game failures on PT...in fact, he had the most success per attempt than the others...
Strief had LBers blowing past him before he turned and set upfield - most obvious case was against Seahawks... Maybe running behind a younger, faster, quicker Armstead will yield more fruit... Either way, PT turns 30 in December, and now's the time to find another RB... |
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
Clearing room for Alex Mack?
|
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles

Only tradeable piece is Moore, maybe Sproles, Thomas if someone needs a transition back an no long term salary commitment as PT is in the last year of his contract... |

Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
Minnesota is supposedly looking for another tailback to back up Peterson. He'd make an excellent fit for them. Actually he'd make a good fit anywhere... his skill set is very broad.
|
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
I think we end up with PT still a saint. Although Sproles has been a match-up nightmare, I think teams have started to figure out how to minimize his affect in our scheme.
|
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
Slightly surprised no team was willing to give a sixth or seventh round pick for Lance Moore to prevent a bidding battle...
Hope he gets an even better deal and that team makes it rain for Lance... Good Luck, Buddy... |
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
Well Lance is gone, wonder who's next? Hope they keep PT and find some team to rip off for Sproles
|
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
Interesting we feel PT is the most underrated back in football and a great screen back but some of you feel he has no trade value.
|
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
Pierre Thomas ? now that would be a loss that scares me. as drew goes so do the saints. blitz pick up is so major in todays pass happy NFL. sproils goes then what we got stones for hands out of the backfield? thats if drew is upright. no back on the roster can do what PT does.

Also, a trading partner will see he's in the last year of his contract, 30+ in December - we might get a 7th at best, otherwise they'll wait till we release him because of the cap... |
Re: Rumor - Saints shopping Thomas, Moore, Sproles
Cutting PT and/ or dealing sproles will signify the start of the ingram/ khiry backfield duo in my opinion
