Saints Agree To Terms With Erik Lorig

1 Attachment(s)
Another FB in backfield to love.
The New Orleans Saints have signed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers fullback Erik Lorig to a four-year deal.

He visited the Saints on Saturday.

Lorig, 27 had been with the Buccaneers for four seasons.

Lorig is a 6-foot-4, 250-pounder from Stanford.

He caught 11 passes for 47 yards last season. For his career, Lorig has 30 catches for 193 yards and one touchdown.

The Saints didn't re-sign fullback Jed Collins, who wasn't tendered as a restricted free agent.

Collins is visiting with the Lions today.

Re: Saints Agree To Terms With Erik Lorig

At 6'4" and 250lbs Lorig plays FB and TE for blocking purposes. Johnson most likely will stay on the PS for development.

One stat that causes pause, no carries in 4 years with the Bucs. Hmmmnnnnn

Re: Saints Agree To Terms With Erik Lorig

Don't read into the stats we just need someone to clear a path for our RB's.

I don't read too much into them, but when the Saints have had 4th and inches I have observed too many times...1st down going in the opposite direction. At least Jed got us a couple last year as well as Drew. Personally, I don't want to see Drew QB sneak.

Sounds like this guy can play a little tight end too. Like his size and versatility.

I liked Collins, but, no sense in overpaying a guy who carries the ball once a game or so.

Good Luck Jedidiah Gabriel Collins! (kind of cool to have Jedi in your name)

And welcome Mr. Lorig!

We need a big, mauling run blocker. Hopefully he fills the need.

I liked Jed but this is a better and cheaper option that is also more versatile

I don't know much about this guy. I hope he's an upgrade because I really thought and hoped we were going to re-sign Jed.

Reports I'm hearing is that he's a considerable upgrade when it comes to blocking.

Love the sign. younger, bigger, better and more upside. Great run blocker...looks like we're gonna be pounding the rock a bit more.

Better blocker, and can play the 3rd TE spot.

I hear he has a great burst, and flat destroys people in his way.

Someone posted a video showing his athleticism, and he absolutely destroyed us in a few of those clips.

I'll try and find...

He's #41.

The more I see of this guy, he reminds me a LOT of David Thomas.

Re: Saints Agree To Terms With Erik Lorig

Let this be a warning shot ... SP has made it apparent we are running the Ball in this model of the New Orleans Offense. He signed a FB before a WR ! This guy was directly responsible for Tampas ability to run the ball with or Wothout Martin.

I challenge anyone to review game film of Jed Collins run blocking for Ingram Robinson Sproles or anyone else whose been in our backfield , more often than not he either completely missed his blocking assignment , got destroyed and blown back into the play or flat out got in the way of the designed hole instead of clearing it.

We will see Brees throw much less , which is a win win. Due to the fact it will extend his career , and well have a much more rested defense. And the defense will be out there a lot less ! Which translates into less opportunities for teams to score on us. I mean the benefits go on and on ...

We will lead the league in rushing this year and have a top 2 or 3 defense.

Oh and this will definitely open things up for Stills and Graham , you can either cover them or stop the run , there's no all the above answer , interesting to see SP go back to the basics

The guy seems like a good fit. I just hope the 4-year contract is a cheap one.

I recall Tampa's run game being significantly better than ours

saintsfan1976 03-18-2014 03:28 PM

Re: Saints Agree To Terms With Erik Lorig

Maybe I'm wrong. Not much to glean from this but I'm sure teams weren't afraid to stack the box against Glennon.

Tampa's attempts/avg
2011 - 346/4.2
2012 - 416/4.4
2013 - 420/3.8

Saints:
2011 - 431/4.9
2012 - 370/4.3
2013 - 391/3.8

Now I'm convinced we're going power run game.

I'm convinced the goal is to make other teams respect the Saints run game. It'll open up the play action. Something the Saints were uncharacteristically bad at last season.

Agreed. The images of Ingram being swarmed around the line of scrimmage last year must have kept Sean up at night.

Great signing. Now we need a good DE, DT, OL, WR in the draft

saintfan 03-18-2014 04:05 PM

Re: Saints Agree To Terms With Erik Lorig

Gotta say I'm really excited about our potential and what seems to be a real effort to solidify our running game. As we all know, if teams have to fear the Saints run game, much at all, we're libel to set more records offensively because the play-action will be next to impossible to stop.

And with our defense...

Whew! We could be in for some really fun-to-watch games this year!

I think our D line is set. I think our needs are more like WR OL LB CB.

Our needs in the draft never change:

BPA BPA BPA BPA... :)

Our biggest hole is still the #2 CB. White proved he is talented but still doesn't know how to play the ball when it's in the air. Verdict on White is he should be the NB. PRob has never played great and is coming off of a serious injury. I hope we draft one of the monster CBs to play physical D; there are a few 6'3+ CBs that should be available for us in the second round.

Intriguing signing. Hope he is as versatile as Thomas was for us.

Solid role player. FB, TE and special teams. Although we love them all, all 53 can't be superstars.

So Sean acquires all the tools necessary to build a complete running game and still throws the ball 42 times a game??

You expect run.
He's sneaky.

Had he paid Jimmy Graham 12m/year..... Expect a power running game.

Add in a pass rushing DT then we will be sitting better. like those grow on trees.

Depth at DE would be cool too
