Well put... Although nowadays the position designations are becoming less and less relevant. Some teams just have left and right safeties with different coverage duties. It's becoming less common to have a single high free safety while the strong safety plays in the box all the time.

I haven't reviewed all 32 teams, but I think there are quite a few that still use strong and free safeties. I'd say there's probably a majority of teams that use SS/FS.

Most L/R safeties are in primarily cover-2 schemes.

That's true about Cover 2 schemes. I think it's broken down far more than that though. Vaccaro is essentially a strong safety but he's been used as a Cover 1 free safety and as a nickel back... That's just one player though but I think there are plenty of teams that situationally use both safeties in different ways.

I believe that Byrd will play a lot of high safety here......freeing up other players. That is how he was used last year. He is really going to give us a Darren Sharper type of impact in the secondary.
Sharper was the catalyst in '09 that brought us home a Superbowl.

Absolutely. Byrd is almost strictly a single high free safety. Vaccaro will move around though from a Cover 2 deep strong safety to an in-the-box strong safety ala Roman Harper. Mix in Bush when it comes to 3 safety looks and all bets are off when it comes to traditional safety designations.

I'm positive Bush isn't going anywhere! Our coaches probably had huge smiles on their faces watching the Seahawks receivers crap their pants whenever Bush was about to hit them in that playoff game!

Nautically Byrd will be a better Safety next to Vaccarro than say Jonathan Meeks.
