Watkins best fit for Saints?

1 Attachment(s)
With 40 days until the NFL Draft fans and analysts alike are pouring over game film trying to align players with teams. As we visiting in my last article (Sean Payton’s Draft Tendencies), Sean Payton likes to draft the skill positions early. The Saints are coming into the draft needing help at a few crucial positions. They need a WR. Marques Colston has been a stud for many years, and still has some gas left in the tank, but his best days are behind him. Kenny Stills showed a lot of promise last year, but in the Saints offense there is need for more than two wide receivers. Other needs lay on the offensive line. Will the Saints draft a center? What about Strief’s potential replacement at right tackle?

On the defensive side of the ball, there are always needs. No matter how good a position is, you cannot have too much depth. Releasing Jabari Greer, Roman Harper, Malcolm Jenkins, Will Smith, and Jonathan Vilma made the team younger but also freed up room and created some positions of need. The Saints also lost a couple of players to free agency. The Saints defense received a big gift from Mickey Loomis this offseason by adding Jairus Byrd to the safety rotation. According to Bleacher Report’s safety rankings the Saints now possess the rank 12 (Rafeal Bush), rank 6 (Jairus Byrd) and rank 5 (Kenny Vaccaro) safeties in the NFL. Not too shabby.

But, at cornerback, there is still a wide open #2 slot waiting for a player to take the lead. The front runners are Corey White and Patrick Robinson, but I also believe the Saints will address this position in the draft. Jaylen Watkins, the older brother of Sammy, is a versatile DB out of Florida. For the past two years at Florida he has alternated between playing both corner and safety, covering receivers in the slot and coming down to help in the run. This type of versatility is important on a defense run by the likes of Rob Ryan who uses multiple fronts. Playing in the SEC also meant covering WRs like LSU’s Odell Beckham, Jr and Jarvis Landry.

At the combine Watkins stood out to me for two things. His strength is impressive as he recorded 22 reps at 225 pounds. He displays this on the field as well, showing the ability to shed blocks muscle against larger WRs. Running a 4.41 showed his speed at the combine. Playing both corner and safety versus elite SEC talent showed it on the field. His measureables are good, but they aren’t great. He came in at 5’11 1/2 and 194 pounds.

No chance.

Although I think his future is very bright we would have to trade like 10 first round picks for him.

JAYLEN Watkins is projected to be a 2nd or 3rd round pick. He is a cornerback from Florida.

I wouldn't mind getting Pierre Desir CB Lindenwood-25 interceptions at the Division II school with Byrd back there playing centerfield, Lewis as the #1, White as the #3 and hopefully Roninson as the #2 we could bring him up to speed, the kid looks to be a ball-hawk with good size. I've got McGill from Utah in my mock in the 2nd but would be happy either 1 wore a Saints jersey.

Good thing I read this before posting or else I would have thought it was Sammy as well lol. I do not watch very much college football, but if he holds his own against strong talent and has the size to play some press man coverage like it sound he could very well be a good pick.

i was looking forward to watching those Fla, CBs play last year and was so disappointed in their play. skill set is there but the reaction skills made me wonder about the football IQ or instincts.

I only want either Dennard from Michigan State or Roberson from Florida.

Is this reverend seriously quoting Bleacher Report?!!

I'd be interested in his credentials; both writing and ordination...

Lately they're no worse than ESPN, FOX, NBC, CBS, NFL.com or just about any other site not named whodatdish or canalstreetchronichles.

I recently gave Watkins a good ranking on my CBs in the draft thread. I figured it was Sammy but wouldnt have been surprised it was Jaylen.

I don't get the hype either. Nowadays people see a CB over 6' and lose their minds about how he could be the next Richard Sherman.

It's not just his size/speed combination; it's the progress he showed at the Senior Bowl and at the Combine...

When scouts see that marked improvement, coachable quality, it jumps out at you - just as Graham did...

The decision is not whether to draft him, but when; the Saints pulled the trigger on Graham in the third; because of his rare size/speed combination, he may geaux as early as the late second, but should be drafted late third round...

The Florida DBs may have great measurables; but they didn't show up every week to play - pass...

Training camp is going to be
interesting .You have to think that there will be a vet CB brought in and Some a draft pick or two. P ROB is a player that Id hope would rise to the occasion.
..A starting job in the NFL and Some one is going to get it.

He's rite... I like Pierre's upside a lot more! Shows natural ability and ball hawking skill, shadows the WR. His plays on the ball are awesome and arrow is definitely pointing way up imo
